Usually, an IP address can reveal an approximate area—not your exact home or real-time location. A website can use your public IP address to estimate the location of the network or connection. The result may be a country, region, or city, but it is not a GPS fix and does not establish where you personally are.
What an IP address can—and cannot—reveal
IP geolocation databases associate ranges of IP addresses with geographic and network information. Depending on the provider and its confidence in a result, a lookup may show a country, region or city, along with details such as an accuracy area, time zone, or internet service provider. Those details describe an IP address or network; they do not identify the person using it. MaxMind explains that IP geolocation is not designed to reveal a person’s precise physical location or street address.
A map pin can make an estimate look more exact than it is. It may mark a representative point for a network or a broad area, not the user’s home. MaxMind says its GeoIP data is not precise enough to identify a specific household, individual, or street address.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Accuracy depends on the requested level of detail, the provider, geography, and connection type. Country-level estimates are generally more dependable than city-level ones, and results can differ between databases or change as providers update their data. Figures below are MaxMind’s own estimates, not independent measurements or guarantees for all IP lookup services.

| Location detail | MaxMind’s stated estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Country | 99.8% country-level accuracy for its GeoIP products; its broader explanation says country accuracy generally exceeds 99% when VPN use is excluded. | A country result is usually more dependable than a city result, but the figures are provider estimates and the broader figure excludes VPN use. MaxMind Support and MaxMind’s accuracy explanation. |
| State or region | About 80% for U.S. IPs in MaxMind Support; its broader explanation gives a typical range of 55%–80% for state or province. | These are estimates at different scopes, not a single universal rate. MaxMind Support and MaxMind’s accuracy explanation. |
| City | For U.S. IPs, 66% within a 50 km radius in MaxMind Support; its broader explanation gives a typical city-level range of 20%–75%. | Even a city estimate may cover a wide area. A displayed pin does not mean someone is at that point. MaxMind Support and MaxMind’s accuracy explanation. |
MaxMind’s figures are provider documentation accessed in 2026; they do not establish how accurate another provider’s database will be for a particular address. The service may also withhold a detailed location when its data does not support one.
Why the estimate may not match where you are
An IP address identifies a network connection, not necessarily the device’s physical position. Mobile networks can route traffic across broad areas, and a hosting or proxy IP may locate a server rather than the person using it. Database coverage and network routing can also affect the result. These are reasons a lookup might show a nearby city, a distant place, or no detailed location at all.

What a VPN or proxy changes
A VPN routes traffic through a VPN endpoint. A website generally sees that endpoint’s IP address, so an IP lookup may show the endpoint’s location instead of the location associated with your ordinary connection. A proxy can have a similar effect. The result remains an estimate: a VPN does not guarantee that every website will show the same location, let you choose a precise street-level location, or hide other identifying signals. MaxMind discusses factors that affect IP geolocation accuracy.
What to do if an IP lookup shows the wrong place
- Check which IP address the lookup is evaluating and whether your connection is using a VPN or proxy; the displayed location may belong to that endpoint.
- Compare the result with another provider, keeping in mind that providers may use different data and return different levels of detail.
- Do not treat a city name or map pin as proof of someone’s home, identity, or exact whereabouts.
IP location is only one kind of location information
This answer concerns location inferred from an IP address. A site or app may have other information, such as location shared through a device permission or information connected to an account. Those are separate sources; an IP lookup alone does not establish what they reveal.
