To prepare for an AI-led coding interview, first ask the recruiter what the format is and exactly which tools are allowed. The phrase can mean an assessment where AI is prohibited, a coding environment with an optional built-in assistant, a live session where AI use is expected, or an AI-powered mock interview for practice. Your preparation should match the interview you will actually take.
Find out what “AI-led” means for your interview
There is no universal AI policy. For example, OpenAI’s interview guide says expectations vary by interview and advises candidates who are unsure to ask their recruiter. Datadog’s AI guidelines say candidates will be told in advance if they are in an AI coding interview; otherwise, candidates should not use AI unless it is explicitly allowed. Perplexity’s practical assessment guide and hands-on coding guide restrict outside AI assistance, with limited exceptions described in the relevant instructions.
Formats differ as well. Accenture describes assessments where a visible built-in assistant may be available but optional. Karat’s NextGen interview is a live, virtual, multi-file coding session where integrated AI use is expected. HackerRank’s AI-powered mock interview is a practice tool that presents coding tasks, asks follow-up questions, and returns feedback. These are different experiences, so a platform’s general AI capabilities do not establish what your employer permits in a particular session.
Ask the recruiter these questions
- Is the assessment live, timed and asynchronous, take-home, or a practical coding session?
- Which editor or platform will I use, and can I try a sample task or sandbox beforehand?
- Is AI prohibited, optional, or expected? If allowed, is it limited to an integrated assistant, or may I use outside tools?
- Are documentation, search, or other external resources permitted?
- What kind of task should I expect: an algorithm exercise, a practical change, a multi-file codebase, or a role-specific problem?
Ask for the applicable rules in writing if they are not already clear. Do not assume that a tool is permitted just because the platform can provide it; the employer or interviewer determines what is enabled for the assessment.

Match your practice to the task
Build on coding skills that remain useful whether AI is present or not: understand the problem, write readable code, test it, and explain why the solution works. Microsoft recommends using the programming language you know best and preparing for topics such as algorithms, data structures, and system design, with AI or machine-learning knowledge where the role calls for it. Perplexity’s candidate guidance emphasizes language fundamentals, code quality, practical problem-solving, abstractions, and engineering principles relevant to your recent work.
For a standard coding exercise
Choose your strongest language. Practice turning a prompt into a plan, implementing a solution, and explaining its complexity, assumptions, boundary cases, and tests. Include cases that may break a plausible first attempt, such as empty input, a single item, duplicate values, or an unexpected value—where relevant to the problem.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For a practical or multi-file task
Practice reading unfamiliar code before changing it. Trace how the relevant pieces fit together, locate the smallest appropriate change, and validate the result. For a role-specific round, review the systems and technologies that matter to the job instead of spending all your preparation time on generic algorithm problems.
For an interview that expects AI use
Rehearse using an assistant as a collaborator, not as an authority. Ask focused questions, inspect proposed code or explanations, and verify any changes yourself. Be prepared to explain what you accepted or changed and why. You remain accountable for the code you submit, even when an assistant helped produce it.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Use a repeatable problem-solving workflow
- Restate the task. Summarize what the program needs to do and identify unclear requirements before coding.
- Ask clarifying questions. Confirm assumptions about inputs, outputs, constraints, and behavior in unusual cases.
- Outline a simple plan. Explain the approach and any important trade-offs before implementation.
- Work in small increments. Write a focused piece of code, then check that it fits the plan before expanding it.
- Run tests and inspect failures. Check ordinary cases and relevant edge cases; use failures to find and correct problems rather than treating a successful compile as proof.
- Explain the result. Describe the reasoning, important trade-offs, and what you verified. If AI was allowed and used, be clear about how you checked its contribution.
Thinking aloud helps an interviewer follow your reasoning and lets them clarify assumptions while you work. Microsoft’s technical interview guidance puts the practical point plainly: “When you finish your solution, don’t forget to test it before you say ‘done!’”
Choose practice that resembles the real assessment
Use a mix of deliberate coding practice and realistic rehearsal. Microsoft recommends practicing and testing solutions. Perplexity describes practical, authored tasks rather than relying on question banks alone. A timed mock can also help you rehearse explanations and follow-up questions, but a mock interview is practice—not evidence of the employer’s exact prompt, tools, or evaluation criteria.

For platform preparation, Accenture points candidates to sample tests and familiarization resources. Perplexity says candidates can request a practice-session link for its CoderPad exercise. CoderPad’s candidate preparation guides provide platform orientation, while its AI assistance depends on whether the interviewer or recruiter has enabled it for the session.

| What to establish | How it changes preparation |
|---|---|
| AI permission: prohibited, optional, or expected; integrated assistant only or outside tools too | Determines whether to rehearse independent problem-solving, AI collaboration, or both. Rules are employer-specific. |
| Structure: live conversation, timed mock, take-home, or practical assessment | Changes how you practice pacing, communication, and the working environment. |
| Task style: algorithms, practical work, multi-file codebase, or role-specific problem | Points practice toward the kind of work the interview is designed to assess. |
| Evaluation: code quality, reasoning, testing, role expertise, and communication | Shows what to explain and verify as you work. |
Prepare your setup
If the employer provides a sample environment or sandbox, try it before interview day. Get comfortable with the editor and follow the platform’s own device and browser requirements. For a live session, check that your browser and screen sharing work so setup issues do not distract from the task.
