To reduce an image’s file size, keep an untouched original, resize it to the pixel dimensions it actually needs, then export it in a suitable format and compare the result at its intended viewing size. Use lossy compression for many photographs when a small visual change is acceptable; use lossless compression when preserving exact pixel data matters. There is no single quality setting that works for every image.

Choose the right kind of compression

Compression reduces the amount of data needed to store an image. The two main approaches make different trade-offs:

  • Lossy compression makes a file smaller by discarding some image information. Lower quality settings usually reduce the file size further but can make artifacts more visible. It often suits detailed photographs, while text, line art, and flat graphics can show damage around sharp edges.
  • Lossless compression reduces file size without losing image data. It is useful when exact pixels matter, though it may not shrink a photograph as much as a lossy format.

Lossy encoding can reduce accuracy through quantization and may also discard color information through chroma subsampling. The result depends on the image and encoder; a format change does not guarantee a smaller file.

Prepare the image before exporting

  1. Keep a copy of the original. Export a compressed version rather than overwriting the only copy. This lets you change formats or settings later.
  2. Resize oversized images. If the image contains more pixels than the destination will display, reduce its width and height while keeping its aspect ratio. This can lower file size before compression. Choose dimensions for the actual display or upload requirement rather than shrinking blindly.
  3. Check what the destination requires. Confirm whether it accepts your chosen format and whether the image needs transparency, animation, metadata, or particular color information. A smaller file is not useful if an important feature disappears or the receiving app cannot open it.

Pick a format that fits the image

Format Often useful for Trade-offs to check
JPEG Photographs where lossy compression is acceptable. Adjust quality and inspect the result for visible artifacts; repeated lossy exports can further change the image.
PNG Images needing lossless output, precise pixels, or transparency. For photographs, it may not shrink the file as much as a lossy option.
WebP Photographs or graphics when lossy or lossless compression is suitable; it also supports transparency and animation. Confirm the destination supports WebP and that the selected mode preserves required features. Google reports lossy WebP images as 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index, and lossless WebP images as 26% smaller than PNG. These are Google’s comparisons, not a promise for an individual image.
AVIF Images where a modern format is supported and its compression and feature options suit the content. Check compatibility and required features in the actual destination; results vary by image and encoder.
SVG Graphics that can be represented as drawing commands, such as some logos and diagrams. It is not a general replacement for compressing photographs.

For web use, web.dev’s image-format guidance recommends weighing image content and requirements rather than assuming one format is always best. Google’s WebP comparison provides the conditions behind its reported savings.

Export, inspect, and adjust

  1. Export a version in the chosen format. For a lossy format, start with a quality setting that seems reasonable rather than aiming for the smallest possible file.
  2. Compare it with the original at the intended display size. Inspect fine edges, text, gradients, and transparent boundaries. Zooming in can reveal artifacts, but judge whether they matter at the size people will actually see.
  3. Adjust and export again if needed. If artifacts are distracting, raise the quality or try a different format. If the image still looks clear and the file is too large, try a lower quality setting or smaller pixel dimensions.
  4. Check the saved file. Verify its actual size, open it in the intended app, and confirm transparency, animation, or other required properties survived.

For web images, web.dev’s compression guidance names Squoosh, ImageOptim, and image optimization services as options. The appropriate choice depends on your workflow and destination; check the output and any relevant tool terms yourself.
