To convert a PDF to Word in Acrobat Reader, sign in with the Adobe ID linked to an Adobe Acrobat Export PDF subscription, then use All Tools > Export a PDF. Choose Microsoft Word and DOCX, convert the file, and save the result. Reader itself is free, but Adobe requires a paid Export PDF subscription for Word conversion in Reader.
Convert a PDF to Word in Acrobat Reader
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader and sign in with the Adobe ID associated with your Adobe Acrobat Export PDF subscription.
- Select All Tools > Export a PDF. The exact labels may vary by Reader version.
- Keep the open PDF selected, or choose a different PDF when prompted.
- Choose Microsoft Word, then select DOCX. Choose DOC only if your workflow requires the older Word format.
- Select the convert command, choose where to save the file, and save the converted Word document.
Choose DOCX or DOC
DOCX is the practical choice for modern Word workflows. Adobe describes DOC as the older format used through Word 2003 and DOCX as the XML-based format used since Word 2007. If another person or system specifically needs DOC, select that format instead. Adobe explains the DOC and DOCX formats.
What to do with scanned PDFs
A scan is an image of text rather than ordinary selectable text. Before converting a scanned document or image, set Document Language to the language used in the source PDF. Adobe says its export tool uses OCR to recognize text in scans. After conversion, review the Word file for text-recognition and layout issues, especially if it contains tables or complex formatting; Adobe does not publish a quantified accuracy guarantee for every document. If Export PDF is unavailable or conversion fails
Check these common prerequisites and file limitations:
- Subscription and sign-in: Confirm that Reader is signed in with the Adobe ID associated with the Export PDF subscription.
- File size: Adobe’s web Export PDF overview lists a maximum file size of 100 MB.
- Password or permissions: Adobe lists password-opened PDFs and PDFs whose permissions prevent printing, copying, or altering as unsupported.
- File type: PDF Portfolios and PDFs generated from Adobe Illustrator are also listed as unsupported.
- Scanned content: Set Document Language to match the document’s text before exporting.
