To make a PDF smaller, use Acrobat on the web for a quick compression or Acrobat desktop for more control. Save a copy, then check that the compressed file still looks right and that its links, forms, and other needed features work. There is no guaranteed size reduction: the result depends on the PDF’s contents and the settings you choose.
Choose a compression method

Use the web option when convenience matters and you are comfortable with the file being handled through Adobe’s cloud workflow. For sensitive documents or when you need to preserve particular features, use a desktop workflow and review the available settings before saving.
Compress a PDF with Acrobat on the web
Adobe’s online instructions, last updated April 1, 2026, use these steps:
- Open Acrobat on the web and choose Convert > Compress a PDF.
- Select the PDF you want to compress.
- Choose a compression level: High, Medium, or Low.
- Choose Compress. Adobe creates a file with a
_compressedsuffix and saves it to Adobe cloud storage. - Use the notification’s download option to retrieve the compressed PDF, then open it and check the result.
Adobe describes the feature as optimizing a PDF by removing embedded fonts, compressing images, and eliminating unnecessary items. The page does not establish a fixed size reduction for every file, so compare the output with your original rather than expecting a particular percentage.

Reduce PDF size in Acrobat desktop
Adobe’s desktop instructions were last updated September 23, 2025. The menu path differs between Windows and macOS:
- Windows: choose Menu > Save as Other > Reduced size PDF.
- macOS: choose File > Save as Other > Reduced size PDF.
Choose the compatibility option, confirm, and save the result as a new optimized PDF. Adobe’s instructions also cover applying the command to multiple files. Menu labels can vary by Acrobat version, so if you do not see the listed command, check your version’s menus or help.

Use Optimized PDF for finer control
When the basic reduced-size command does not offer enough control, Acrobat’s Optimized PDF settings let you target particular parts of a document. Adobe’s advanced instructions, last updated November 5, 2025, describe these options:
- Images: downsample images to reduce pixel information and choose compression. Stronger reduction can save space in image-heavy PDFs, but may make images less detailed. Adobe distinguishes lossless Flate compression from lossy JPEG compression.
- Fonts: unembed fonts or subset them. Changing embedded fonts can affect how text appears on systems without the same fonts.
- Transparency: lower or flatten transparency. This can change appearance or how content behaves.
- Objects and user data: remove items that are not needed. Depending on what you remove, comments, forms, multimedia, private data, or other document content may be lost.
- Cleanup: remove invalid elements or prepare the PDF for fast web view.
These are choices, not a checklist to enable wholesale. Make changes that fit the document, save to a new file, and inspect the output. Adobe also notes that selecting an older Acrobat compatibility target may limit the compression features available.

Check the compressed PDF before sharing it
File size is only one measure of success. Compare the compressed copy with the original and check the parts that matter for your use:
- Read text at normal viewing size, especially small text and scanned pages.
- Check photographs, diagrams, and other images for lost detail or visual artifacts.
- Open links and confirm that forms, comments, or other interactive elements you need are still present and usable.
- Check the file size and confirm it meets the email, upload, or storage limit you are trying to meet.
Keep the original until you have confirmed the compressed version is acceptable. If the result is still too large, try a more targeted image or content adjustment in Optimized PDF rather than removing document elements indiscriminately.
