To connect an existing domain to Shopify, update its DNS records with the domain’s DNS provider, then add the domain in Shopify admin at Settings > Domains > Connect existing domain. For a root domain, Shopify’s manual instructions specify an A record, an AAAA record, and a www CNAME; for a subdomain, use a CNAME. DNS changes and secure-certificate activation can take up to 48 hours.
Choose the domain address you want to use
The DNS setup depends on whether visitors will use the root domain, such as example.com, or a subdomain, such as shop.example.com. Shopify’s manual instructions use different records for each. Shopify’s manual connection guide lists the root-domain records, while its subdomain guide describes the CNAME-only setup.

Connecting a domain does not transfer its registration to Shopify. You continue to manage its settings, billing, and renewal through the provider where it is registered. Shopify explains the third-party domain connection process here.
Connect a third-party root domain
Make these DNS changes wherever the domain’s DNS is hosted. That may be the registrar’s dashboard or a separate DNS service. Shopify’s manual guide specifies the following records:

- Sign in to the account for the service hosting your domain’s DNS and open its DNS or domain-record settings.
- Set the root A and AAAA records and the
wwwCNAME to the values above. Keep only one A record and onewwwCNAME associated with this setup; remove conflicting duplicates. If the provider rejects the compressed IPv6 value, try Shopify’s expanded value:2620:0127:f00f:0005:0000:0000:0000:0000. - Leave the provider’s default TTL; Shopify says it does not need to be changed. Save the records.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains, choose Connect existing domain, enter the root domain without
www, and connect it. - Check the domain’s status in Shopify. If the admin presents a different regional A-record address, use the value Shopify shows for your store rather than overriding it with the general value in the manual guide.
Use the domain provider’s default nameservers unless you intentionally host DNS elsewhere. If another DNS service is authoritative for the domain, its nameservers can stay in place as long as they respond and publish the required Shopify records. A provider dashboard can show the right records while the domain still fails to connect if the nameservers are missing or unreachable. Connect a Shopify subdomain
For an address such as shop.example.com, create a CNAME in the DNS service hosting the domain. Set the host to the subdomain label, such as shop, and its target to shops.myshopify.com. Do not add an A record for this Shopify subdomain.

Then open Settings > Domains in Shopify admin and follow the prompts to connect the full subdomain. Use the exact host and target format accepted by your DNS provider; some providers automatically append the root domain to the host field.
Use automatic setup if Shopify offers it
Shopify may offer an automatic connection flow for supported providers. If it appears, follow the on-screen steps to sign in to the provider and authorize or make the requested DNS changes. The available providers and prompts depend on the flow Shopify presents for your domain; otherwise, use the manual DNS steps above. Shopify’s third-party connection guide describes this process.

Allow time for DNS and SSL activation
Shopify estimates third-party DNS changes usually take effect within two hours but may take up to two days. Its manual connection and troubleshooting guidance likewise gives an upper bound of 48 hours for propagation or activation. These are estimates, not a guarantee for every DNS provider. If Shopify still shows a pending connection or certificate status, allow the full 48 hours after saving records before making repeated changes.
Fix connection or certificate problems
If the domain has not verified, or its SSL/TLS certificate is still pending after the propagation window, check the DNS and domain status in a deliberate order. Shopify’s troubleshooting guide and secure-connections guidance identify common blockers.

- Check the domain’s status: confirm it is active and has not expired or been suspended.
- Compare every record: verify record type, host, and target against the correct root or subdomain setup. Look for duplicate A records or conflicting
wwwCNAMEs. - Check authoritative nameservers: ensure the nameservers respond and publish the records Shopify is checking. Editing records in a dashboard that is not authoritative for the domain will not update public DNS.
- Check DNSSEC and proxy settings: Shopify flags active DNSSEC and a Cloudflare proxy as possible connection or certificate blockers. Review the provider’s configuration and Shopify’s troubleshooting steps before changing them.
- Review CAA records: if certificate issuance is stalled, check whether CAA restrictions prevent the certificate authority from issuing a certificate, and follow Shopify’s secure-connection guidance.
- Wait before editing again: when public DNS results differ from the provider dashboard, Shopify advises allowing propagation before making further changes.
If Shopify says the domain belongs to another store
A domain already connected to a different Shopify store may need ownership verification before it can be connected to the current store. Use the TXT-record or automatic verification method Shopify offers in the connection flow. Shopify’s instructions for a domain already connected to another store explain the verification path.
Know who can change the domain settings
For a third-party domain, DNS edits and account access remain with the provider or DNS host. Shopify states: “Shopify Support can’t access your third-party domain’s settings.” If you need help changing provider-side records or account settings, contact that provider; Shopify can advise what information to give them. Shopify’s support guidance for third-party domains explains this boundary.
