Choose ROCm/HIP when your software depends on AMD’s supported compute libraries or a framework with a HIP/ROCm backend, or when you are porting CUDA source code. Choose Vulkan compute when you are building or using an application that needs a cross-platform GPU API and can work with compute shaders and Vulkan’s explicit resource and synchronization model. Neither choice is universally faster, and ROCm support depends on the exact GPU, operating system, driver, ROCm release, and software.

ROCm vs. Vulkan on Radeon: the practical difference

ROCm is AMD’s GPU-compute software stack. HIP is its programming interface; ROCm also includes libraries used by supported scientific and AI software. Vulkan is a cross-platform graphics and compute API. Its compute route is built around shaders that an application dispatches to the GPU.

That distinction matters more than the API names: ROCm is often the practical choice when your framework or application already targets HIP/ROCm. Vulkan is often the practical choice when you are developing an application that needs Vulkan’s cross-vendor API, or when the software you want already provides a Vulkan compute backend.

Decision ROCm/HIP Vulkan compute
Best fit Applications and frameworks with a supported HIP/ROCm backend; CUDA-source porting work using HIP tools. Applications that implement compute shaders directly or use software with a Vulkan backend.
What you program against HIP and the ROCm libraries or frameworks available for your supported configuration. Compute shaders, pipelines, resource management, synchronization, and dispatch.
Main check before choosing Confirm that AMD supports your specific GPU, OS, driver, ROCm release, and intended framework. Confirm that the device exposes the needed Vulkan features and that the target application implements the operations you need.
Portability Bound by AMD’s supported device and operating-system combinations. Designed to span GPU vendors and platforms, though feature availability and driver behavior vary by device.
Speed Depends on the workload, framework, kernels, GPU, and software stack. Depends on the workload, shader implementation, GPU, and driver.

When ROCm/HIP is the better choice

Your framework or application targets ROCm

If the software you need offers a ROCm or HIP backend, that is usually the most direct route to AMD’s compute libraries and supported framework integration. Check support for the exact combination you plan to install; a framework’s ROCm support can be narrower than the broad claim that HIP supports AMD GPUs.

You are porting CUDA source code

AMD documents HIPIFY tools that can convert many CUDA runtime calls into HIP equivalents. This is a source-porting aid, not a promise that arbitrary CUDA binaries will run unchanged. Code that queries architecture features or depends on unsupported CUDA capabilities may need manual changes.

AMD’s HIP FAQ says, “HIP supports AMD GPUs,” but also directs users to detailed prerequisites and support information. Apply that broad statement only after checking the release-specific requirements for your device and operating system in AMD’s ROCm compatibility matrices.

When Vulkan compute is the better choice

You need Vulkan in a cross-platform application

Vulkan is designed as a cross-platform API for graphics and compute. If your application already uses Vulkan, compute shaders can let it perform GPU work through the same general API rather than depending on a separate AMD-specific compute stack.

You can work at the shader and API level

A Vulkan compute program creates a compute pipeline and dispatches workgroups. Shader invocations can execute in parallel and share workgroup memory. The application must manage resources and synchronization and query device limits, including constraints on workgroup counts and shader local size. Khronos states that compute shader support is mandatory in Vulkan implementations; that establishes API capability, not a ready-made backend in every application.

Does ROCm support your Radeon GPU and operating system?

There is no timeless list of “ROCm-compatible Radeons.” AMD publishes versioned compatibility information, and support depends on the full configuration: GPU, ROCm version, operating system, driver, and often the framework or component you intend to use. Check AMD’s Radeon and Ryzen compatibility matrices and the relevant ROCm compatibility matrix for the release you plan to install.

For a dated example, AMD’s ROCm 7.2 Linux release notes list the Radeon RX 9070 XT, along with other Radeon models, as compatible for that release. The listed operating systems for those notes are Ubuntu 22.04.3 and RHEL 10.0. This is evidence for that release and platform, not a guarantee for another ROCm version, OS, or software combination.

Do not treat Linux, Windows, and WSL as interchangeable

AMD’s Windows matrix describes Windows 11 support for specified Ryzen AI hardware in the displayed ROCm 7.2.1* row. AMD also says that PyTorch on Windows includes ROCm 7.2 components, but the entire ROCm stack is not yet supported on Windows. The Windows support matrix and AMD’s HIP FAQ provide the relevant qualifications; the HIP FAQ notes that not all HIP runtime API functions are supported on Windows.

AMD’s Radeon Software for Linux 26.12 notes, dated May 20, 2026, list release-specific supported distributions and known issues. AMD recommends distribution-integrated AMD Linux GPU drivers for many common cases; for recent discrete GPUs that are not yet well supported by a distribution, its installer may be appropriate. Follow current AMD Linux driver release notes and your distribution’s instructions rather than relying on old installation commands.

Is ROCm faster than Vulkan on AMD?

There is no universal speed winner. Performance depends on the GPU, driver, framework, kernel or shader implementation, and workload. The official documentation cited here does not provide an apples-to-apples ROCm-versus-Vulkan benchmark for a specified Radeon workload, so it cannot support a general speedup claim.

If performance decides the choice, compare the same end-to-end task on the target system. Use equivalent work, include the parts that matter to your application—such as data transfer and setup—and measure the software versions and GPU you actually plan to deploy. A result for one shader, framework, or card does not establish which API will be faster for another.

A decision checklist

  1. Name the workload. Identify the application, framework, or code you need to run, and check whether it offers a HIP/ROCm backend, a Vulkan backend, or both.
  2. Verify ROCm support if considering HIP. Check the current AMD matrix for your exact GPU, ROCm release, operating system, and driver; then confirm that the relevant framework or library supports that configuration.
  3. Verify Vulkan support at both levels. Check the Vulkan features available on the target device, then confirm that your application implements Vulkan compute and the operations you need.
  4. Account for development effort. If you are writing a Vulkan application, budget for shaders, pipelines, resource handling, synchronization, and device-limit checks. If porting CUDA source, assess HIPIFY coverage and identify CUDA-specific features that need manual work.
  5. Benchmark the actual task. If either route is viable, compare end-to-end performance on the target GPU and software versions instead of choosing from a generic API speed ranking.
