They are different releases. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack runs the Nintendo 64 version in the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app; Majora’s Mask 3D is a remaster for the Nintendo 3DS family, with refreshed visuals and several interface and gameplay additions. Which one makes sense depends on whether you want the N64 release on Switch or the 3DS-specific changes—and whether you have access to a 3DS copy.

What Majora’s Mask 3D changes
The 3DS edition is more than the N64 game displayed on a newer system. Nintendo calls it a full remaster and documents conveniences designed around the handheld’s two screens, plus new or revised features.
Touch-screen access and tracking
- Use the touch screen to access items and the map.
- The upgraded Bombers’ Notebook includes alarms, helping you keep track of events and appointments.
Hints, fishing, and camera controls
- Sheikah Stones offer hints.
- Fishing holes are among the 3DS edition’s additions.
- Camera movement can use the system’s motion controls. Nintendo also lists Circle Pad Pro support on original Nintendo 3DS models and C Stick camera control on New Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo UK game page
What to expect from the Switch version
On Switch, you are playing the Nintendo 64 release through Nintendo’s N64 app, not the 3DS remaster. Nintendo says Nintendo 64 Classics can differ in performance and presentation from their original versions, but its general product page does not specify exactly how Majora’s Mask differs. It does not support a precise game-specific claim about frame rate, resolution, or other technical behavior.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose Switch Online if you want the Nintendo 64 release on Switch and already have, or want, an Expansion Pack membership.
- Choose the 3DS edition if you want the remaster’s visual overhaul, touch-screen features, notebook alarms, hints, fishing holes, or its additional camera controls—and can play it on a 3DS-family system.
- Check access before deciding: the Switch option depends on regional service availability and an active Expansion Pack membership. The 3DS eShop no longer accepts new purchases, so check current physical-cartridge availability, condition, and price.
