Linux can be a good everyday computer system if the apps, devices, and games you rely on work with it. Ubuntu is one documented desktop option for browsing, messaging, gaming, content creation, and development, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every app or workflow. Before replacing your current system, check your must-haves and try Ubuntu from a USB drive.
What can you do on Linux day to day?
A Linux desktop can handle common tasks through graphical apps and settings. Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop documentation describes everyday use and names Firefox, Chrome, Discord, Steam, and OBS Studio among example applications. That list is illustrative, not a promise that every app’s features or integrations match its Windows or macOS version.
Check the precise app and the features you need. If your work depends on a Windows- or Mac-only desktop program, look for the vendor’s current Linux support or see whether its browser version covers your workflow. Also check required file formats, browser extensions, accessibility tools, and any employer or school software.
Ubuntu documents graphical desktop tasks and a guided installation, as well as a beginner command-line section. You can start without making the terminal your main interface, but it is not possible to promise that you will never need command-line troubleshooting.

Will your computer and accessories work?
Hardware compatibility depends on the exact computer and components, not just the brand. Canonical’s Ubuntu Certified hardware list covers computers tested and confirmed to work well with Ubuntu. If your model is not listed, Canonical recommends trying Ubuntu rather than assuming it will fail.
A live USB preview is a practical way to check the parts of your setup you actually use. Test Wi-Fi, sound, webcam, suspend and resume, display scaling, external monitors, printers, and input devices. A live preview uses open-source drivers and may not reflect how hardware behaves after you install or enable a proprietary driver; check separately if your setup depends on one, including some NVIDIA graphics configurations. Canonical’s Try Ubuntu tutorial explains the preview process.

Can you play your games?
Steam supports Linux, and Steam Play may let Linux users run some Windows-only games. Neither fact establishes that a particular game will work. Compatibility can differ by title, launcher, hardware requirements, and anti-cheat setup.
Before making Linux your only system, check the current operating-system and hardware requirements for each game you consider essential. Steam’s SteamOS hardware and software information describes the platform context, but it is not a guarantee for every Windows game.

How to try Ubuntu without replacing your current system
Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop documentation says you can try Ubuntu from a USB stick without making permanent changes to the computer. The trial is useful for checking both the desktop and your actual everyday tasks.
- Prepare a USB drive. Ubuntu’s tutorial recommends a flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Back up anything you want to keep: creating bootable media erases the selected drive.
- Create the bootable USB. Follow the steps in Canonical’s Try Ubuntu tutorial, and carefully confirm that the USB drive—not another disk—is the target.
- Boot from the USB and choose the trial. Use the computer’s boot options to start from the USB, then select the option to try Ubuntu rather than install it. The exact key or menu can vary by computer.
- Test your real setup. Open the apps and files you depend on, connect important accessories, and check the hardware functions listed above. A desktop that looks right is not enough if a required device or workflow is missing.
You do not need to buy a new computer just to investigate Linux if you can try your current one. An 8 GB or larger USB drive is useful for the trial, but buying a computer is optional.

How to decide whether Linux fits your needs
Make a short checklist before switching. Compare the systems you are considering against your own requirements, rather than relying on a universal ranking of distributions.
- Must-have apps and workflows: Confirm current Linux support for each app and feature, including file exchange and browser dependencies.
- Your exact hardware: Check the computer model and important peripherals; use the live trial to test them.
- Must-play games: Verify each title’s present-day support and requirements rather than assuming broad compatibility from Steam support.
- Maintenance: Consider whether the distribution’s update process and documentation suit your expectations.
- Help when something goes wrong: Look for relevant vendor or community documentation and support.
- Trial results: Decide whether the live session works well enough for your real tasks, while remembering that proprietary drivers may behave differently after installation.
Ubuntu is a reasonable example to investigate because Canonical documents its desktop tasks, guided installation, and USB trial. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner among Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, or other distributions; choose a maintained general-purpose distribution that fits your requirements, then verify it on your hardware.
