For a choice between two particular tools, compare dimensions and weight with the battery installed, the work you need to do per charge, required accessories, kit battery count, charging time, and total price. Are M12 and M18 batteries interchangeable?
No. Milwaukee says M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers, and M12 batteries are compatible with M12 tools and chargers. What M18 battery sizes mean for the choice
Milwaukee describes its M18 battery tiers as different size-and-use trade-offs. CP packs are the compact option; XC packs balance size and weight with power and runtime; HD packs are larger and intended to provide high power and longer runtime for demanding applications. Consider the battery as part of the tool setup: a larger pack changes the size and weight you handle, as well as the intended runtime and power trade-off. Compare the complete tool-and-battery combination for the work you do.

Can one Milwaukee charger charge M12 and M18 batteries?
Yes. Milwaukee’s M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger, model 48-59-1812, accepts batteries from both families and charges them sequentially. That is charging compatibility only; it does not allow M12 batteries in M18 tools or M18 batteries in M12 tools.
Milwaukee states on the product page that this charger charges compact packs in 30 minutes and extended-capacity packs in 60 minutes. Treat those as manufacturer-stated figures for the relevant packs, not universal charge-time guarantees; check the current documentation for the exact battery.

Milwaukee also lists a M18 & M12 Rapid Charge Station, model 48-59-1807. The manufacturer says it accepts up to three M18 and three M12 packs and charges three batteries simultaneously. Those are product-page specifications, not an independent comparison of charging performance.
When a mixed M12 and M18 setup makes sense
A mixed collection can be practical when particular M12 tools suit compact or close-quarters work and particular M18 tools suit more demanding tasks. It also means maintaining two battery families. The 48-59-1812 charger can charge both, but batteries remain specific to their own tools.

Milwaukee’s rotary-hammer category includes M18 models across SDS Plus and SDS Max and describes M18 FUEL rotary hammers for demanding work. This is a concrete reason to examine M18 for rotary-hammer applications; it is not evidence that all M18 tools are superior to all M12 tools.
