If a game looks blurry or shimmery with DLSS, first identify which DLSS feature is enabled, then compare settings in the same scene and at the same output resolution. Super Resolution, DLAA, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction do different jobs, so changing a generic “DLSS” setting may not address the symptom you see.
Identify which DLSS feature is enabled
NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of technologies, not one universal image-processing switch. The feature names matter when troubleshooting:
- DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input, using multiple lower-resolution images, motion data, and feedback from prior frames. NVIDIA says, “DLSS Super Resolution boosts performance by using AI to output higher-resolution frames from a lower-resolution input.” NVIDIA Developer’s DLSS overview explains the feature.
- DLAA uses the Super Resolution technology for AI anti-aliasing at native resolution. It is a useful image-quality comparison when available, but it is not an upscaling mode and does not offer the same performance trade-off as rendering from lower-resolution input.
- Frame Generation creates additional frames. It is distinct from Super Resolution: test it separately if the concern is motion presentation, rather than assuming it changes the underlying detail reconstruction. NVIDIA says Frame Generation is paired with Reflex for responsiveness; that does not mean it fixes image detail or reconstruction artifacts.
- Ray Reconstruction targets ray-traced or path-traced scenes, replacing conventional hand-tuned denoisers with a learned reconstruction network. If blur or shimmer appears only in such content, this is a relevant setting to isolate.

Compare settings without changing the scene
Before adjusting anything, note the game, GPU, display/output resolution, active DLSS feature and mode, ray-tracing status, and when the artifact appears. Compare the same scene and camera angle, changing one setting at a time. Check a still view and movement separately; an issue that appears only during motion may call for a different test than one visible in a static view.

Test Super Resolution modes at your output resolution
Games may offer Quality, Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Performance modes. These represent different scaling choices in the game’s implementation: because Super Resolution reconstructs from lower-resolution input, the image detail and performance can change as you switch modes. Compare the modes the specific game offers at your actual output resolution, watching both fine detail and shimmer while moving. There is no universally best mode for every game, GPU, and display resolution.
Use DLAA as a separate quality comparison
If the game offers DLAA and your GPU has enough performance headroom, compare it at native resolution. This can help establish whether the concern is associated with the game’s upscaling path, but DLAA is not a like-for-like replacement for a lower-resolution Super Resolution mode when performance is the priority.

Isolate Ray Reconstruction and Frame Generation
For ray-traced or path-traced scenes, compare the same view with the game’s Ray Reconstruction control changed, if available. For motion-related complaints, test Frame Generation independently from Super Resolution. Keeping each change separate makes it easier to tell which feature, if any, tracks with the symptom.
Why some blur and shimmer may be game-integration issues
NVIDIA’s developer integration checklist identifies implementation details that can affect image quality. It states: “Incorrect or missing jitter can lead to poor anti-aliasing and increased flickering.” The checklist also says, “Without this, textures will look blurry, smudgy, or low-resolution.” In that second statement, “this” refers to setting mip-map bias when DLSS Ray Reconstruction is enabled. These are developer-side requirements and potential failure modes, not guaranteed explanations for a particular player’s image. The same guidance discusses accurate motion vectors, correctly provided exposure, where DLSS is placed in the post-processing pipeline, and correct buffers. Those are implementation details a player generally cannot adjust in the graphics menu. They help explain why visual behavior can differ between games, scenes, materials, and movement, but do not establish a diagnosis for an unnamed game.
Check GPU and model support before updating
DLSS feature and model availability varies by GPU generation and game. NVIDIA says its app can update supported games to use newer DLSS features and models, but an option appearing in a general DLSS overview does not guarantee support in a particular title or on every RTX card. Check the exact feature against NVIDIA’s current DLSS compatibility information and the game’s own settings. If you update, compare the same scene before and after rather than assuming the newer model will resolve a symptom.

NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution FAQ, updated January 14, 2026, says Model M is optimized for Performance mode and Model L for Ultra Performance mode. NVIDIA recommends those pairings for the models’ quality-versus-performance benefits. The same FAQ says RTX 20- and 30-series users may see a larger performance impact from the newer model because those GPUs do not support FP8, and may prefer the previous Model K preset for higher frame rates. Changing Super Resolution mode can affect both image detail and performance because the feature reconstructs output from lower-resolution input. The resulting trade-off depends on the game, output resolution, GPU, and implementation; compare actual modes in the title rather than applying a universal ranking as a guaranteed result.

For its 2026 announcement of a new Ray Reconstruction model, NVIDIA reported 35% more compute capability and 20% more parameters than the prior model, while saying performance remains similar. Those are NVIDIA-reported model comparisons, not measured game frame rates or a promise of a particular image-quality gain. See NVIDIA’s Gamescom 2026 announcement.
When the cause remains unclear
There is no established independent benchmark here quantifying blur or shimmer across games, and the symptom alone cannot identify a cause. If comparisons do not isolate a setting, the useful details to record are the game, GPU, output resolution, active feature and mode, ray-tracing status, and whether the defect occurs in still views, movement, or a specific effect. Those details distinguish a mode or feature comparison from a game-specific integration problem.
