Safari and Firefox provide stronger cross-site tracking protections by default than Chrome’s configurable third-party-cookie controls. Safari turns on Intelligent Tracking Prevention by default, while Firefox enables Total Cookie Protection in its Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection mode. Chrome lets you choose whether to allow or block third-party cookies, and blocks them by default in Incognito. Which browser suits you best also depends on your device, account and sync preferences, extensions, and the sites you use.
At a glance: how their privacy defaults compare
| Browser | Default cross-site tracking protection | Controls and compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Safari | Apple says Intelligent Tracking Prevention is on by default and uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking. Its Privacy Report shows trackers prevented from profiling you. (Apple’s Safari privacy documentation) | Private Browsing adds tracking and fingerprinting protections. Cross-site features such as embedded sign-ins may be affected on particular sites. |
| Chrome | Third-party cookies are a user-configurable setting. Google says they are blocked by default in Incognito, not that every Chrome user has the same default for ordinary browsing. (Google’s cookie settings help) | You can manage cookie settings and site exceptions. Google warns some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked. |
| Firefox | Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default in Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection. It puts cookies in site-specific jars to limit their use across unrelated sites. (Mozilla’s Total Cookie Protection explanation) | Enhanced Tracking Protection offers settings for tracking technologies, and Mozilla also documents fingerprinting protections. Stricter protections can affect specific site functions. |
This compares documented features, not independent tests of how much tracking each browser prevents. Apple, Mozilla, and Google describe their own products; their documentation does not establish a universal privacy, speed, or battery-life winner.
What the privacy features mean in practice
Safari: tracking prevention built into Apple’s browser
Apple says Intelligent Tracking Prevention is enabled by default and helps prevent cross-site tracking. The Privacy Report gives you a view of trackers Safari prevented from profiling you. These are Apple’s descriptions of Safari’s features, not independent measurements of their effectiveness. (Apple’s Safari privacy documentation)
Safari’s protections can matter when a page relies on content or sign-in features that connect across websites. If one of those features fails, investigate the particular site and setting rather than assuming you must turn off all protections.
#1 Best Overall

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Chrome: configurable third-party cookie controls
Chrome’s cookie controls let you allow or block third-party cookies. Google says they are blocked by default in Incognito; for ordinary browsing, check the setting on your device instead of relying on an assumption about every installation. Google also documents site-specific exceptions. (Google’s cookie settings help)
Google treats cookie settings as one part of a broader privacy picture. Account sign-in, Safe Browsing, site data, and Incognito are separate choices; using Chrome does not by itself tell you which account or privacy settings you have selected. (Google’s Chrome privacy overview)

Firefox: cookies isolated by site
Firefox’s Total Cookie Protection puts cookies into separate, site-specific jars when Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection is active by default. That makes it harder for one site’s cookies to be used to track you across unrelated sites. Mozilla also documents protections against tracking technologies and fingerprinting. Built-in protections reduce some forms of tracking; they do not stop all tracking. (Mozilla’s Total Cookie Protection explanation; Mozilla’s Enhanced Tracking Protection guide)
Private Browsing and Incognito do not make you anonymous
Private or Incognito windows primarily change what the browser retains on your device and add some protections; they are not a guarantee that websites you visit cannot identify or observe your activity. Apple says Safari Private Browsing does not add visited sites to history and adds tracking and fingerprinting protections. Google describes Incognito as helping keep browsing private from other people who use the device. Neither description promises anonymity from visited sites, a network, an employer, or an internet provider. (Apple’s Safari privacy documentation; Google’s Chrome privacy overview)

For privacy in ordinary browsing, review tracking controls, account sign-in and sync choices, and the data you share directly with each site. Those are distinct from whether a window is private.
Choosing a browser for everyday use
- Choose Safari as a natural fit if you already use Apple devices and want Apple’s built-in tracking protections and device integration. Treat Apple’s speed or battery statements as vendor claims, not independent head-to-head results.
- Choose Firefox as a natural fit if you want site-specific cookie isolation enabled in its standard protection mode and prefer its available tracking controls.
- Choose Chrome as a natural fit if Chrome’s ecosystem and workflows suit you and you are willing to review its configurable cookie settings, account choices, and site exceptions.
These are workflow-based suggestions, not a universal ranking. Battery use, speed, extension availability, and compatibility depend on the operating system, browser version, and task. The available documentation does not establish a current independent three-way performance winner, so compare the browsers on the device and sites you actually use.

When a site breaks, troubleshoot the specific exception
Blocking third-party cookies can affect some site features, including embedded sign-ins or media widgets. Google explicitly warns that some sites may not work as expected when those cookies are blocked and documents site-specific exceptions. (Google’s cookie settings help)

- Identify the exact feature that fails, such as a sign-in button or embedded player, and note which browser and privacy mode you are using.
- In Chrome, review the third-party cookie setting and the site exceptions in Chrome’s cookie settings. Use an exception for the affected site if needed rather than changing the setting for every site.
- In Safari or Firefox, check the relevant site’s behavior and the browser’s tracking-protection controls. If the issue persists, consult the browser’s help for the version you use; do not assume disabling all privacy protections is necessary.
How to make the comparison relevant to you
- Start with your operating system: Safari’s strongest everyday fit is within Apple’s device ecosystem, while your extension and workflow options depend on the browser versions available for your platform.
- Decide whether you want stronger cross-site protections enabled by default or more direct control over third-party-cookie behavior.
- Consider whether you use browser sign-in and sync, and review those settings separately from tracking prevention.
- Test important sites and extensions in your normal browsing setup; private modes are not a substitute for checking ordinary-browser behavior.
