If ROCm is not detecting your Radeon GPU, first verify that your exact GPU, operating system, kernel, driver, ROCm release, and framework are a supported combination. Then check the driver, Linux group access, and runtime visibility in that order. Reinstalling packages cannot make unsupported hardware or an unsupported software combination officially supported.

Before troubleshooting, record your exact setup

Capture these details and the complete output of each command you run. They help distinguish a compatibility mismatch from an installation, permissions, or runtime problem.

  • GPU: the precise Radeon model, not just “Radeon” or the GPU family.
  • Operating system and kernel: distribution and release, plus the kernel version. On Windows, record the Windows version.
  • Software stack: ROCm release, AMD driver, and the framework and version you are trying to use.
  • Installation method: package manager, amdgpu-install, pip, tarball, or runfile, as applicable.
  • Configuration: whether this is a single-GPU or multi-GPU system, and whether the workload runs in a container.
  • Evidence: installer warnings and errors, plus the full output from relevant checks below.

Do not combine commands copied from different ROCm release guides. AMD describes ROCm as a coordinated stack of compatible firmware, driver, and user-space components, so matching versions matters as much as the GPU model.

Does my Radeon GPU support ROCm?

Check AMD’s compatibility documentation for the precise combination you intend to run: GPU model, ROCm release, operating system and version, kernel, driver, and framework. Support for one Radeon card or ROCm release does not establish support for every Radeon card or release.

AMD’s ROCm 7.2.1 Radeon Linux compatibility matrix lists supported models from RX 9000 and RX 7000 families, including the RX 9070 XT, RX 9060 XT, RX 7900 XTX, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7700 XT, as well as specified Radeon PRO and AI PRO models. Its listed operating-system combinations include Ubuntu 24.04.4 Desktop with HWE kernel 6.17, Ubuntu 22.04.5 Desktop with HWE kernel 6.8, and RHEL 10.1. The matrix also specifies framework versions; a listed GPU alone is not enough to confirm a compatible setup.

That Radeon-specific Linux matrix is for ROCm 7.2.1. AMD’s separate ROCm 10.1.0 compatibility matrix, dated August 26, 2026, covers Linux and Windows. Use the matrix that matches your target release and platform, and recheck AMD’s current documentation because compatibility pages can change.

If your GPU or software combination is absent from the applicable support table, treat it as unsupported rather than assuming a reinstall will resolve the issue. AMD notes that some HIP runtime functions may still run on unsupported hardware, but that does not mean prebuilt ROCm libraries are officially supported; runtime errors can occur.

How do I fix ROCm installation errors on Radeon?

Choose one documented installation method

AMD’s general ROCm 10.1.0 installation guide describes package-manager, amdgpu-install, pip, tarball, and runfile methods. It recommends starting with a package manager on Linux or a tarball on Windows if you are unsure which approach to use. Select one method that fits your platform and workload; avoid layering installation instructions from different releases or switching methods without first resolving the existing installation.

For Radeon graphics and ROCm on Linux

AMD’s Radeon Linux installation guidance recommends the graphics use case. In a terminal, run:

sudo amdgpu-install -y --usecase=graphics,rocm

Read the installer output for errors or warnings that indicate driver installation failure. After installation, reboot the system before checking driver and GPU visibility.

Check whether the kernel driver installed

After reboot, run:

dkms status

This checks the status of DKMS-managed modules, including the AMD GPU kernel driver. If the AMD driver is missing or has an installation error, focus on the driver installation and whether your OS, kernel, and driver combination matches AMD’s guidance. Do not treat a later runtime check as proof that a failed driver install is fixed.

Why is ROCm not detecting my Radeon GPU on Linux?

Check user access to the GPU

By default, AMD documents Linux GPU access through the video and render groups. Check the current user’s memberships:

groups

If either group is absent, add the current user to both:

  • RGB Lighting

sudo usermod -a -G render,video $LOGNAME

Reboot for the membership change to take effect, then run the visibility checks again. For a workload inside a container, configure GPU access on the host as well; changing the container user’s groups alone may not provide access to the device.

Check runtime visibility

Run these checks after the driver is installed and user access is configured. Save their complete output so you can see where visibility stops.

Check What it helps establish If the expected device is not visible
dkms status Whether the AMD GPU kernel driver is installed through DKMS. Investigate the driver installation and confirm the OS, kernel, and driver match AMD’s supported combination.
rocminfo Whether the GPU appears as an HSA agent, including its reported GFX target or marketing name. Check driver status and Linux group access first, then verify the GPU and software stack against AMD’s matrix.
clinfo Whether an AMD accelerated-computing platform and GPU device are visible through this check. Compare its result with rocminfo and confirm that the relevant installed components and framework are supported.

The checks test different layers; one passing does not guarantee that a particular framework can use the GPU. AMD’s general installation documentation also identifies amd-smi as a system-information check. For Python-based installations, it suggests checking installed ROCm packages and the rocm-sdk command.

Use the results to narrow the cause

  • Driver check fails: investigate the driver installation and the OS/kernel/driver combination before changing framework settings.
  • Driver check passes but runtime visibility fails: check group membership, reboot status, hardware support, and whether the installed user-space components match the driver and ROCm release.
  • Runtime sees the GPU but your framework does not: verify that the framework version is listed for your GPU, platform, and ROCm release, and that it was installed for that supported setup.

What if I am using Windows or an unsupported GPU?

Windows support is framework-specific

AMD documents PyTorch with ROCm components on Windows 11 for a limited set of Radeon GPUs. The entire ROCm stack is not yet supported on Windows. Check AMD’s current Windows compatibility list for your exact GPU and the documented PyTorch path; do not apply Linux installation, group-permission, or full-stack instructions to Windows.

Unsupported hardware and multi-GPU systems

If your GPU is not in the applicable supported table, reinstalling ROCm does not make it officially supported. Some HIP runtime functions may work, but AMD warns that prebuilt ROCm libraries can produce runtime errors on unsupported cards.

For multi-GPU Linux systems, AMD notes that setting iommu=pt at boot may be necessary to prevent application hangs. Treat this as a specific multi-GPU troubleshooting consideration, not a general fix for single-GPU detection or installation failures.

What to include when asking for help

Share the exact GPU model; OS distribution and release or Windows version; kernel where applicable; AMD driver and ROCm versions; framework and version; installation method; single- or multi-GPU setup; container status; and complete installer, dkms status, rocminfo, and, where relevant, clinfo output. With those details, others can compare the failing layer against AMD’s compatibility requirements instead of guessing at a package reinstall.
