On iPhone, you can translate pages, preview links, customize the Start Page, create profiles, and—on eligible devices—summarize webpages with Apple Intelligence. iPadOS 26 adds a compact tab bar, while Mac Safari offers tab-layout settings and manual Tab Groups. Update your device, then follow the steps for your platform below; features may differ by model, language, and region.
Use Safari’s newer features on iPhone
Preview a link or translate a webpage
- Preview a link: Touch and hold a link to see a preview without leaving the current page. From the preview, you can open the link in a tab or Tab Group, download a linked file, or add it to your Reading List.
- Translate a page: Tap the Page Menu, then tap Translate to [language] if that option appears. Safari translation is not available in every language or region.
To visit a site, enter its name or address in Safari’s search field. Apple’s Safari guide for iPhone covers browsing, link previews, and translation.
Customize the Start Page and a website’s display
- Open a new tab, scroll to the bottom of the Start Page, and tap Edit.
- Choose which sections to show. Apple lists Favorites, Tab Group Favorites, Privacy Report, Reading List, Recently Closed Tabs, and iCloud Tabs, as well as a background image.
- On a webpage, tap the Page Menu to adjust text size or show Reader when those options are available for the site.
- To select where downloaded files go or adjust privacy options, open Settings > Apps > Safari. The available controls are described in Apple’s Safari settings guide.
Create a Safari profile
Profiles keep browsing contexts separate: each has its own favorites, history, tabs, and Tab Groups. On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > New Profile, enter a name, and choose an icon and color. Apple says profiles also appear in Safari settings on an iPad or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account. The verified creation path here is for iPhone; menu steps can differ on other devices. Summarize a webpage with Apple Intelligence
On a supported iPhone, open a webpage, tap the Page Menu, then tap Summarize. Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone model or in every language or region. Apple also notes that generated results can vary, so check important details against the original page rather than treating a summary as a verified substitute for reading it. Keep Safari in sync across devices
When Safari is enabled in iCloud settings or preferences, devices signed in to the same Apple Account can keep tabs, bookmarks, history, and Reading List up to date. iCloud Tabs can also be shown on the iPhone Start Page. Apple explains Safari browsing and sync in its iPhone guide and customization guide.
Use the compact tab bar on iPad
Apple’s iPadOS 26 update notes identify a compact tab bar in Safari. It provides more room for browsing and lets you search from the active tab. Availability can depend on the iPad model and region; install the update and check Safari’s available tab controls on your device. See Apple’s iPadOS 26 update notes.

You can also create and use Tab Groups manually on iPad. Apple’s current tab-organization guide includes instructions for Apple Intelligence topic organization that refer to iPadOS 27 and eligible hardware. Those AI instructions should not be assumed to describe an iPadOS 26 feature. Consult Apple’s iPad tab-organization guide for instructions that match your installed version.
Adjust tabs and create Tab Groups on Mac
Change tab behavior and layout
Open Safari > Settings > Tabs to adjust Mac tab preferences. Apple lists choices for Separate or Compact layout, whether webpages open in tabs or windows, automatically closing old tabs, showing website titles, and keyboard shortcuts for switching among the first nine tabs. Make a Tab Group
- Open the tabs you want to keep together.
- Click the arrow next to the Sidebar button.
- Choose New Tab Group with [number] Tabs, enter a name, and press Return.
- Use the sidebar to reopen the group later.
These are manual Tab Groups. Apple’s current Mac guide also discusses Apple Intelligence topic suggestions, but includes macOS 27 references; do not assume that AI-assisted organization is available on macOS 26. See Apple’s guide to Mac Tab Groups.
