Start with the settings and software tools already provided by your desktop and distribution, make changes one at a time, and keep a clear way to reverse them.
Start with the settings already on your desktop
Before installing customization tools or copying commands from a guide, open your desktop’s Settings application. The available controls depend on your Linux distribution and desktop environment, but common starting points include display scaling, keyboard and pointer behavior, accessibility, notifications, and search.
- Display: Adjust scaling or resolution if text and controls are difficult to read. The best option depends on your display and desktop.
- Keyboard and pointer: Look for repeat speed, shortcuts, pointer speed, and touchpad options. Input controls can make everyday navigation more comfortable without changing how the system is built.
- Accessibility: Check for features such as larger text, visual or typing assistance, and other options suited to your needs. Ubuntu documents accessibility alongside system, privacy, and hardware settings in its desktop guide; KDE documents accessibility and input-device modules in its System Settings handbook.
- Notifications and search: Review which apps can interrupt you and how desktop search finds files or apps. These preferences can reduce distraction without adding another utility.
Menu names and exact controls vary by desktop and release. If a setting is missing, consult the documentation for the version you are using rather than assuming another desktop’s instructions apply.
Choose the desktop workflow that suits you
Linux desktops make different choices about navigation and customization; there is no universal best option for every user. Consider how easily you can find settings, whether the default workflow feels comfortable, and whether the accessibility and input options support your devices and needs.

GNOME
GNOME has documented interface conventions that shape how its apps and desktop behave. Its Human Interface Guidelines describe those conventions and are primarily design and development documentation, not a consumer usability comparison. If you like GNOME’s approach, begin with the controls included in your distribution before adding extensions or other changes.
KDE Plasma
KDE documents Plasma as offering extensive customization, including window management, desktop effects, search, hardware management, and widgets. Its System Settings handbook describes configuration modules, including accessibility and input devices. That breadth can be useful if you want to adjust more of the desktop from its built-in settings.

If your system offers more than one desktop session, try the available session or a live preview before committing to a switch. Check that your actual hardware and essential apps work as you expect; the options and behavior depend on your distribution and installed desktop version.
Install apps through a route you understand
Your distribution’s software center is often the simplest place to look for applications: it gives you a graphical way to browse and install software using the options your distribution provides. Use the distribution’s normal tools when you want packages and updates managed through its usual workflow.

Flatpak is another way to distribute and run Linux desktop apps across distributions. Official Flatpak documentation describes graphical installation through interfaces such as GNOME Software or KDE Discover. Flatpak apps run in sandboxes, and permissions or host integration can affect access to files, devices, or other system features. Permissions and behavior differ by app, so consult that app’s support information if a file, device, or integration does not work.
Make routine maintenance predictable
Use your distribution’s regular update tool for system updates, and look up instructions written for your distribution and release. Update controls, package sources, and procedures can differ, so a command or menu path intended for another system may not apply to yours. Keep routine updates separate from optional desktop experiments: that makes it easier to understand what changed if something behaves differently.

Experiment with a way back
Back up important files before major system changes. KDE Linux documents backing up and restoring to a secondary disk or network location in its backup and restore guide. An external USB drive is one possible secondary destination; network storage is another. Choose capacity based on the files you need to protect, and verify that the backup contains what you expect before relying on it.
For smaller desktop changes, keep the recovery path simple:

- Write down the setting, app, or command you are changing and where you found the instructions.
- Change one thing at a time, then check whether the result solves the problem.

- Before a larger change, confirm that important files are backed up and that you know how to restore them.
Label your notes and instructions with the distribution and desktop they apply to. Keeping both the change and its undo path visible lets you simplify Linux on your terms.
