You play a Guardian who explores the broken land, uncovers traces of the people who lived there, and restores their memories. Its story is designed to emerge through places, records, equipment, and encounters—not only through a central plot.
What is the story of The Relic: First Guardian?
The game’s premise is that Arsilthus was devastated when a great relic was destroyed. The player’s role is to mend the shattered land and honor the memories of those who came before. The developers frame the Guardian less as a legendary savior than as someone who listens to the lives and histories left behind. Steam’s description gives this broad premise without requiring a detailed plot synopsis.
Project Cloud Games describes the intended tone as an old folktale: quiet, lingering, and attentive to ordinary lives. A damaged wall, a burned letter, or an object left behind can suggest what happened to the people who once occupied a place. The studio’s phrase for this approach is “Everything remains as a story.” PlayStation Blog reproduces the developers’ folktale framing.
The game draws on Korean folklore and ancient mythology for its dark fantasy atmosphere. That describes its broad influences; it does not establish that the story is a direct retelling of any particular real-world myth.

How does Arsilthus work as a world?
A semi-open journey, not an unrestricted open world
Arsilthus is described as semi-open and interconnected. The main journey gives players direction, while branching routes and hidden spaces offer opportunities to find optional events, bosses, relics, and powerful equipment. The developers present discovery as part of the storytelling, so exploring off the main route can reveal more than combat rewards.
Regions shaped by their histories
In a July 2026 interview, Project Cloud Games described environments that include mist-covered forests, dark swamps, plains, starlit areas, ruined kingdoms, mines, fortresses, sanctuaries, corrupted villages, and ancient ruins. The team said each region is intended to have its own history, faith, tragedy, and emotional atmosphere. Discoveries connect place, story, reward, and combat
A useful way to understand the exploration loop is that a location or clue leads to a discovery; the discovery opens up a story and often a reward; and that thread may culminate in a boss encounter. Director In-hyeok Park described bosses as the conclusions of particular incidents or tragedies, rather than simply large enemies placed along a route. The result is a world where an optional detour can carry narrative weight as well as gameplay value. Park’s interview with Thumb Wars explains the role of records and boss stories.
How is the story told?
Story information is distributed through the environment and through things the player finds. Fragmented records called Field Pages point toward locations, equipment, and boss encounters. Equipment is also presented as carrying history, linking the act of gathering useful gear with learning about the people and events behind it.

This structure means that lore collection, traversal, rewards, and combat reinforce one another. The main path provides a journey through Arsilthus, while discoveries away from it can add context to particular places and tragedies. The developers sum up the idea in the interview: “Every discovery is part of a story, and that story is ultimately about people who tried to survive in this broken world.” The director’s interview also describes Field Pages and the narrative role of bosses.
How do combat and progression work?
Build a playstyle through equipment, not character levels
The Relic: First Guardian does not use traditional character levels. Progression instead centers on weapons, equipment, runes, relics, crafting, and passive effects. The emphasis is on finding combinations that suit your playstyle rather than accumulating levels on a character sheet. Weapons and defensive timing
Steam lists five weapon masteries: Sword & Shield, Battle Staff, Daggers, Two-Handed Weapons, and Longsword. Its store description says attacks do not consume resources, while stamina is used for defensive actions such as dodging and blocking. Powerful magic uses cooldowns and a separate meter. These are store-page descriptions of the game’s mechanics and may change with updates.
Park said Sekiro influenced the combat’s tension: players read an opponent and decide when to attack or defend. He also stressed that parrying is not the only answer. Dodging, guarding, and choosing different weapons and skills are valid ways to approach a fight. The director’s interview discusses those combat influences.

Boss encounters and overall scale
Steam advertises up to 80 mythic boss encounters. “Up to” is the store’s product claim; it is not an independently verified count, nor does it mean every encounter is mandatory. Project Cloud Games estimated that most players would take around 30 hours, while noting that duration varies with play style and can be longer for completion-focused exploration. That is the developer’s estimate from a July 2026 GamingBolt interview, not a guaranteed playtime.

- If you like guided exploration: the semi-open structure offers a directed journey with optional routes and discoveries, rather than promising an unrestricted open world.
- If you prefer gear experimentation: progression revolves around equipment, runes, relics, crafting, and passive effects instead of traditional character levels.
- If you enjoy deliberate action combat: the combat emphasizes reading opponents and choosing when to defend or attack, with multiple weapon types and options beyond parrying.
- If you want story beyond cutscenes: environmental details, Field Pages, equipment, and optional encounters all contribute to the world’s history.
Release timing depends on platform and edition
Published release information is not consistent across the pages available. PlayStation Blog announced May 26, 2026 for PS5. A Perp Games page dated June 29, 2026 lists a July 31, 2026 digital launch for PC and PS5, a physical edition later in 2026, and Xbox later in 2026. Steam now describes the game as launched and includes a post-launch note. These pages do not reconcile platform, region, or edition timing, so check the relevant platform store for current availability rather than relying on a single date. A Meridiem Games product page describes a Collector’s Edition package containing a physical game disc, steelbook, Past Lives hardback book, coin, map poster, and an exclusive in-game weapon set. The page establishes the package contents, not current stock or regional availability.
