To move data from an Android phone to a new iPhone, start the iPhone’s initial setup and choose From Android on the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen. Most users should use Apple’s Move to iOS app; supported Android devices may also offer an app-free QR-code transfer. If you have already finished setting up the iPhone, Apple’s automated transfer requires erasing it and starting over.
Before you begin
- Check iPhone storage. Make sure the Android content you want to move—including anything on an external Micro SD card—will fit on the iPhone.
- Prepare both phones. Turn on Wi-Fi on Android, connect both devices to power, and keep them close together during the transfer.
- Update Chrome if needed. If Chrome bookmarks matter, update Chrome on the Android phone before transferring.
- Plan your connection. A direct USB-C connection is a documented faster option, but use it only if both phones and the cable support data transfer. Otherwise, use Wi-Fi.
- Be ready to activate cellular service. Setup may ask you to activate a phone number, SIM, or eSIM, and your carrier may need to help.
Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad guide covers the setup transfer and its requirements.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | What you need | Pairing |
|---|---|---|
| Move to iOS app | An Android phone that can install the app from Google Play | Enter the one-time code shown on the iPhone, then connect to the temporary Wi-Fi network it creates |
| App-free transfer | A supported device running a compatible version of Android 17 or later; availability depends on the phone manufacturer | Scan the QR code displayed during iPhone setup; if scanning fails, use the session ID or pairing code |
Both routes are selected during initial iPhone setup. The app-free option is not available on every Android device, so check with the phone’s manufacturer if it does not appear. For either method, a compatible USB-C data cable is optional; Apple describes the wired connection as faster.
How to transfer with Move to iOS
- Start iPhone setup. Turn on the new iPhone and follow the prompts. If Quick Start asks about another Apple device, choose Set Up Without Another [Apple] Device.
- Choose Android transfer. On Transfer Your Apps & Data, tap From Android, then choose Transfer with App.
- Prepare the Android phone. Open Move to iOS, accept its terms, and follow the permission prompts. On the iPhone, continue until the transfer screen shows a one-time code.
- Pair the phones. Enter that code in Move to iOS on Android and join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone. If a cable connection triggers a USB prompt, adjust Android’s USB settings as needed.
- Select what to move. Choose the available content categories on Android. Leave Move to iOS open, keep the phones near each other and connected to power, and wait for the iPhone’s loading bar to finish. Apple Support instructs, “Make sure that you leave both devices alone until the transfer finishes.”
- Finish setup and check the result. Complete iPhone setup, inspect the content you need, and download any matched free apps from the App Store.
Transfer time depends on how much content you are moving; Apple does not give a general duration. Even if Android says the process is complete, wait until the loading bar on the iPhone finishes.

- Accessibility and display settings
- Web bookmarks, mail accounts, and calendars
- WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, and call history

Music, books, and PDFs must be moved manually. Apple’s Move content manually from Android to iOS guide also explains how to handle photos and videos, documents, and apps. If your mail, contacts, or calendars are synced with Google, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo, or another supported account, add that account to the iPhone to access its synced information.
Can I move my WhatsApp chats?
Yes. Apple lists WhatsApp messages and media among the content that can transfer through the Android-to-iPhone setup migration. Select the relevant content when prompted and keep the transfer running until the iPhone’s loading bar completes.

Can I transfer after I already set up the iPhone?
Apple’s automated Android migration is part of initial setup. To use it after completing setup, you must erase the iPhone and start over. If you do not want to erase it, move supported content manually instead, using Apple’s manual migration guide.
Will my SIM or eSIM transfer?
Follow the cellular setup prompts on the iPhone. A carrier may need to activate your number or SIM, and moving an eSIM from a non-Apple phone may require carrier activation or a carrier-provided QR code. Support depends on the carrier and device, so if the iPhone does not offer a transfer, contact your carrier. See Apple’s eSIM transfer guide for Android to iPhone.

Why is Move to iOS stuck or incomplete?
Try Apple’s troubleshooting steps if progress stops or content appears to be missing:
- Keep Move to iOS visible on Android. Do not use the Android phone or answer a call before the transfer ends.
- Turn off Android apps or settings that could interfere with Wi-Fi, and turn off cellular data on Android before retrying.
- Restart both phones and try the transfer again.
- If the iPhone runs out of space or appears full after an incomplete transfer, confirm the Android content fits in the iPhone’s available storage, erase the iPhone, and repeat the migration.
- After setup, check for missing content and download any matched apps from the App Store.
Apple’s full setup and troubleshooting instructions are in its Android-to-iPhone transfer guide.
