The right way to move data depends on the phones you’re moving between. Use Apple Quick Start or a backup for iPhone to iPhone, Android’s setup copy for Android to Android, Move to iOS for Android to iPhone, or Google’s setup transfer for iPhone to Android. Start the transfer while the new phone is being set up when the method requires it, and keep the old phone until you’ve checked that the important data arrived.

Choose the transfer method for your phones

Move Best starting point Important limitation
iPhone to iPhone Apple Quick Start, or restore an iCloud or computer backup Quick Start availability can depend on software and device management; transfer time varies.
Android to Android Copy apps and data during Android setup, by cable or wirelessly; a Google Account backup is an alternative Some files, account data, settings, and app data may not copy.
Android to iPhone Move to iOS during initial iPhone setup If the iPhone is already set up, Apple says to erase it to use this flow, or move content manually.
iPhone to Android Choose the iPhone/iPad source option during Android setup; use cable or wireless as supported Transferable categories depend on the Android device and method. Some content, including iCloud photos and videos, may need separate handling.

Before choosing, check whether the new phone has completed setup, whether you can unlock the old phone, how much storage the new phone has, and which data categories matter. A cable is optional when the supported setup flow offers wireless transfer; connector fit and compatibility vary.

Prepare both phones

  • Charge both devices and keep the old phone nearby and unlocked.
  • Know the old phone’s passcode or screen lock. Follow any prompts to approve the transfer or trust the new device.
  • Check that the new phone has enough storage for the data you want to move.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi or another internet connection when the setup flow requests it.
  • If using a cable, confirm that it fits both phones and supports the transfer route; you may need an adapter.

Transfers can take minutes or longer depending on the amount of data and conditions. Keep devices connected and follow the transfer app’s instructions about leaving it open or avoiding other use.

Transfer from iPhone to iPhone

Use Quick Start

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the current iPhone. Make sure the current iPhone is unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and has Bluetooth enabled.
  2. Follow the Quick Start prompt on the current iPhone to set up the new one, then follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Choose direct transfer from the current device or download from iCloud when offered.
  4. If you choose direct transfer, leave both devices near each other and wait until the migration finishes. If you choose iCloud, apps and data download in the background.

Apple documents Quick Start for setting up a new iPhone from an existing iPhone or iPad on supported software. Device management may prevent Quick Start. See Apple’s Quick Start instructions.

Restore a backup instead

If you have an iCloud backup, choose the restore option during the new iPhone’s setup and sign in with the Apple Account used for that backup. You can also restore from a computer backup. The content available depends on what was included in the backup; follow Apple’s backup and restore instructions.

Transfer from Android to Android

Copy during new-phone setup

  1. Turn on the new Android phone and begin setup. Connect both phones to an internet connection when prompted.
  2. Choose the option to copy apps and data, then follow the instructions. Use a cable or wireless transfer if the setup flow offers both.
  3. Sign in to your Google Account when prompted. If your old phone is available, unlock it and approve the requested steps.
  4. Choose what to copy and wait for the transfer to finish.

Google says cable and wireless transfer in this setup flow support the same data categories, but recommends signing in to a Google Account for a more complete transfer. The copy option may not be available after setup, so use it while setting up the phone. If the old phone is unavailable, you may be able to restore an existing Google Account backup when prompted; availability depends on the account, backup, phone, and Android version. See Google’s Android transfer instructions and Google’s backup and restore instructions.

  • Downloads such as PDFs and media in hidden folders.
  • Apps installed outside Google Play, or data from apps that do not use Android backup.
  • Data associated with non-Google accounts, including some contacts and calendars synced elsewhere.
  • Ringtones and some device settings.

The exact result can vary by phone and Android version. For important app data, check that app’s own backup or transfer options.

Transfer from Android to iPhone

Use Move to iOS during iPhone setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup. At the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, choose From Android.
  2. On the Android phone, open the Move to iOS app and follow its prompts to connect to the iPhone.
  3. Keep both devices charged and connected as instructed. A USB-C cable can connect the phones if supported; Wi-Fi is an alternative.
  4. Select the data categories offered, then leave Move to iOS open and wait for the transfer to complete before using either phone.

Some free apps may be matched if they are available on both platforms and support the transfer feature. That does not mean all apps, paid apps, or app data will move. If the iPhone is already set up, Apple says to erase it and start setup again to use Move to iOS, or move content manually. Follow Apple’s Android-to-iPhone instructions; Google also provides Move to iOS setup guidance.

Transfer from iPhone to Android

Copy during Android setup

  1. Start setting up the new Android phone and choose the option to copy data from an iPhone or iPad.
  2. Follow the prompts for a cable or wireless transfer, depending on what the phone supports. For a wired connection, check that the cable fits both devices; an adapter may be needed.
  3. Select the data categories shown on the new phone and keep both devices connected until the copy finishes.
  4. Turn off iMessage on the iPhone so messages can be delivered reliably to the new phone.

Google’s transfer table separates supported content by classic wireless, classic cable, and upgraded methods; availability depends on the new phone and the selected route. Check Google’s iPhone-to-Android transfer table and instructions for your device. If your photos and videos are in iCloud Photos, Google describes transferring them separately through Google Photos; see Google’s iPhone-to-Android guide for the current steps. Google also has a guide to switching from iPhone to Android.

Check the new phone before wiping the old one

After setup, open the new phone and verify the data that would be difficult to replace:

  • Contacts, photos and videos, messages, and call history.
  • Calendars and any contacts or calendars synced through accounts other than Google or Apple.
  • Apps that hold important information, such as chat, authenticator, or work apps. Open each one and confirm its own data and sign-in state.
  • For an iPhone-to-Android move, confirm iMessage is off and check that any iCloud Photos content you need has been transferred.

Some data is tied to an app or account rather than the phone’s general transfer. Use the app’s own migration or backup process where necessary. Keep the old phone until you have confirmed what matters; erase it only after verification.
