Evaluate a photonic AI accelerator on the complete inference system, not its optical multiply-accumulate speed alone. The decisive question is whether the device meets your model’s accuracy, latency, throughput, and energy targets after you account for conversion, memory, control, data movement, and the digital operations that light does not perform.
1. Define the inference workload you need to run
Start with a workload specification before looking at accelerator claims. Record the model and task, input dimensions, batch size or sequence length, data type and precision, target quality, and service-level requirements. For language-model inference, distinguish prompt prefill from token generation; for vision, name the model and dataset rather than substituting a device-level operation count.
Also identify which parts of the model execute optically and which remain digital. An integrated tensor-processor report from 2026, for example, describes optical execution of convolution and fully connected layers while other operations remain digital; its MNIST accuracy also differs between precision and low-latency modes. That makes the mode and task part of the result, not a footnote.
A small classification demonstration can establish that a device performs a useful computation, but it does not establish that a production service will benefit. A 2024 Nature Photonics experiment reported 410 ps latency and 92.5% accuracy for a six-neuron, three-layer coherent optical network on six-class vowel classification. Those figures describe that experiment and task; they do not specify production-scale throughput, energy per inference, or performance on a larger model.

2. Draw the system boundary before measuring
Map the full path an inference takes: input encoding and modulation, optical computation, detection, ADC and DAC, digital activations or other operators, memory, control, interconnect, and host transfers. Include laser and phase-shifter power where the design uses them. State whether each reported number is measured on hardware, derived from a calibrated model, or produced by simulation.
Keep component measurements separate from complete-system measurements. Optical-core latency or power can help explain a design, but it cannot stand in for the cost of getting data into and out of the core or completing the rest of the model. The BYOD evaluation framework makes this system-level distinction explicit: it maps AI models to configurable architectures and evaluates end-to-end energy, throughput, and accuracy cycle by cycle. Its abstract describes simulating the model’s end-to-end data flow on the architecture.

In one BYOD Iris example, simulated power was dominated by electronic components. The same example associated an 8-bit ADC setting with halved energy and no considerable accuracy loss. Both findings are specific to that modeled configuration; they are not general estimates of electronics’ power share or proof that 8-bit conversion is the right choice for another workload.
3. Measure the metrics that determine deployment fit
Use the same workload and system boundary for all reported results. At minimum, collect the following:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Task quality: Run the same model and dataset as the software baseline. Report the precision mode, target or threshold, and any accuracy or quality degradation.
- Latency: Define start and stop points and include relevant conversion and data-movement time. If the service has a tail-latency objective, report the relevant tail statistic rather than only an average.
- Throughput: Report completed inferences per second at the stated batch size or concurrency. Peak optical operations per second is not completed workload throughput.
- Energy and power: Prefer energy per completed inference and system power under the stated load. Disclose whether the measurement includes the laser, conversion, memory, host, and cooling.
- Area and density: Say whether the figure covers the photonic core, package, or full system. A 2025 study comparing compact nanophotonic structures on an Iris task notes that defining a single operation in nanophotonic media is itself difficult.
- Robustness and repeatability: Report run-to-run variation, calibration, drift, noise conditions, and any compensation or retraining used.
Individual published figures can still be useful when kept in scope. A 2025 Nature Communications nanophotonic-media study reports 1 mW input optical power at 1550 nm and 56 mW peak phase-shifter power. These are reported experimental power details, not a full-system energy-per-inference result. Likewise, a 120 GOPS photonic tensor-core result reported in a 2024 Nature Communications paper is a device performance figure, not directly comparable to workload-level throughput.
4. Test accuracy with quantization and hardware imperfections
Photonic inference uses analog signals, so performance can be affected by noise, component variation, and fabrication imperfections. Measure quality after quantization and under realistic non-idealities rather than relying only on ideal arithmetic or a software-only simulation.

For each reported accuracy result, document:
- the precision and quantization settings;
- the noise, variation, or other hardware conditions applied;
- the baseline and the amount of quality loss, if any;
- whether mitigation used noise-aware training, stability training, knowledge distillation, post-fabrication compensation, or another method;
- whether calibration or compensation is one-time, per-device, or repeated during operation;
- whether retraining used measurements from the actual hardware; and
- whether accuracy held under the field conditions expected for deployment.
A Heidelberg publication record describes noise in photonic integrated circuits and peripheral I/O as a possible source of accuracy degradation and reports examining knowledge distillation, stability training, and Gaussian-noise injection. A Lightening-Transformer artifact models quantization, input phase and magnitude variation, wavelength-division-multiplexing dispersion, and systematic error terms. The nanophotonic-media study describes post-fabrication compensation for fabrication-induced errors. These are useful robustness approaches to evaluate, but their mention does not establish that every device uses them or remains accurate under every operating condition.

Classify each result by evidence level: measured on hardware, produced by a calibrated model, analytically estimated, or generated by a simulator. Simulation can help explore architectures and operating points, but its output depends on modeled components, assumptions, and workload. Record those assumptions alongside the result; do not present a simulated estimate as a measured accelerator benchmark.

For instance, BYOD’s cycle-accurate evaluation simulates end-to-end model data flow on configurable architectures. The Lightening-Transformer work describes a modeled optical Transformer workflow and a research artifact evaluated using NVIDIA A100 and A6000 GPUs. That artifact supports research simulation; it is not itself a photonic inference accelerator.
6. Compare alternatives on matched terms
Before comparing two systems, align the workload, quality target, measurement boundary, and evidence level. If those differ, a headline comparison can be misleading. Use a comparison sheet like this:
| Comparison axis | What to match or disclose |
|---|---|
| Task and workload | Model, dataset, input dimensions, batch or sequence length, concurrency, and software baseline |
| Quality | Accuracy or application threshold, precision, and allowable degradation |
| Latency and throughput | Measurement start and stop points, load, and service objective |
| Energy | System boundary and power measurement method |
| Hardware scope | Photonic core, electronics, memory, control, host, package, and any required GPU or other equipment |
| Evidence level | Measured hardware, calibrated model, analytical estimate, or simulator output |
| Operational assumptions | Calibration, retraining, drift management, fabrication yield, programmability, and availability |
The cited demonstrations span experimental chips, small classification tasks, and modeled Transformer architectures, so their headline numbers should not be ranked directly without workload and boundary normalization. The available evidence does not establish which photonic inference accelerators are currently purchasable or provide buyer-ready prices and specifications; procurement and product-readiness decisions require current vendor information.
7. Make the decision against your service targets
Use a staged decision rather than picking the largest optical-MAC figure:

- Reject workload mismatches. Confirm that the device supports the model operations, input shapes, precision, and batch or sequence behavior your service requires.
- Require a system-level result. Ask for latency, throughput, quality, and energy across a disclosed boundary, including the relevant electronics and data movement.
- Validate quality under realistic conditions. Check quantization, noise, variation, calibration, compensation, and any retraining against your required quality threshold.
- Confirm the evidence and operating assumptions. Separate hardware measurements from simulation, then establish what calibration, host equipment, and drift management are needed in operation.
- Compare only normalized results. If workload, quality, or measurement boundaries differ, treat the figures as separate demonstrations—not a head-to-head ranking.
