Scientists study asteroids because they preserve clues about how the solar system formed, may carry chemical ingredients relevant to life’s origins, and can help researchers improve plans for protecting Earth. An asteroid could cause serious damage if it struck Earth, but NASA says an impact by an asteroid large enough to cause widespread damage is highly unlikely for at least the next 100 years. That is a risk worth monitoring—not a sign of an imminent catastrophe.

Why do scientists study asteroids?

Asteroids are remnants of the material that formed the solar system. Unlike Earth, whose early history has been substantially altered by weathering, erosion, and plate tectonics, some asteroids preserve evidence of ancient conditions and materials. Studying their composition and history helps scientists investigate how planets formed and changed. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx FAQ describes the mission’s Bennu material as “a time capsule from the earliest days of our solar system.”

What asteroids can reveal about life’s ingredients

Some carbon-rich asteroids contain organic compounds. Those compounds are relevant to research into the chemistry that preceded life and whether asteroids may have delivered some of life’s chemical ingredients to early Earth. Finding organic matter is not finding life: it does not show that an asteroid hosted organisms or prove where life began.

Why bring asteroid samples back to Earth?

Spacecraft can study objects remotely, but returned samples can be examined in laboratories with methods and instruments that cannot be carried aboard a spacecraft. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission collected 121.6 grams (4.29 ounces) from Bennu on October 20, 2020, and returned the sample capsule to Earth on September 24, 2023. A NASA report published August 22, 2025 describes carbon, nitrogen, organic matter, and material altered by interactions with water and exposure to space. These findings help researchers understand Bennu’s parent body and the distribution of life’s chemical ingredients; they are not evidence of life on Bennu.

Why was Bennu chosen for OSIRIS-REx?

Bennu offered scientific and practical advantages for a sample-return mission. It is a remnant of early solar-system history, rich in carbon and organic compounds, and crosses Earth’s orbit. Its orbit made it more accessible than many asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. Studying Bennu up close also helps researchers refine knowledge of its shape, surface, and the forces affecting its orbit—information that can improve models used to assess other near-Earth asteroids. NASA’s mission FAQ gives the collection and return details.

Could an asteroid hit Earth?

Yes. An object on an Earth-intersecting orbit could strike the planet, and a sufficiently large impact could cause damage. But the possibility of an impact is not the same as a prediction that one will happen soon. NASA says an impact by an asteroid large enough to cause widespread damage is highly unlikely for at least the next 100 years. That is a qualitative assessment, not a stated annual probability. NASA’s asteroid facts page provides that assessment.

Bennu’s long-term estimate is not an imminent warning

Bennu is often discussed because it is a well-studied near-Earth asteroid, but its current estimate should be read with its time window attached. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx FAQ says there is no chance of an impact through the mid-2100s and gives a 1-in-1,750 chance—less than one-tenth of one percent—through at least 2300. That long-term estimate does not mean Bennu is expected to hit Earth. It is an estimate that depends on continued orbital observations and calculations.

How do scientists know if an asteroid is dangerous?

Scientists assess more than whether an object passes near Earth. They need to determine its orbit and whether that orbit could intersect Earth’s, estimate its size and physical properties, and consider the possible consequences of an impact. More observations can refine an orbit and change the estimated risk. A temporary entry on an impact-risk list is not confirmation that an object will hit; additional observations may rule out a possible impact solution.

NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies maintains impact-hazard assessments as objects are discovered and observed further. NASA’s planetary-defense work includes finding, tracking, and characterizing potentially hazardous objects, coordinating preparedness, and developing mitigation technologies. Its scope also includes comets, although the focus here is asteroids. See NASA’s Planetary Defense overview and its impact-risk explainer.

Could scientists stop an asteroid from hitting Earth?

One demonstrated approach is a kinetic impactor: a spacecraft deliberately collides with an asteroid to change its motion. In 2022, NASA’s DART mission struck Dimorphos, a small asteroid moonlet orbiting the larger asteroid Didymos. The collision changed Dimorphos’s orbit around Didymos and shortened its orbital period by 33 minutes. NASA’s DART mission page reports the result.

DART was a controlled technology demonstration, not an emergency response to an asteroid on course to hit Earth. Its result shows that a kinetic impactor changed the motion of its specific target; it does not establish that every asteroid, impact scenario, or warning time can be managed the same way. A real response would depend on the object and the time available.

What to take away

  • Asteroids preserve evidence about solar-system formation that Earth’s changing surface has largely lost.
  • Carbon-rich asteroids can contain organic compounds useful for studying early chemistry, but organics are not proof of life.
  • Asteroids can pose an impact hazard, so observatories track them and update risk estimates as evidence improves.
  • NASA considers a widespread-damage-class asteroid impact in at least the next 100 years highly unlikely; Bennu’s separate estimate concerns a much longer period, through at least 2300.
  • DART demonstrated one asteroid-deflection technique on Dimorphos, not a universal solution.
