Safari doesn’t have one master switch for every feature. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Safari; on Mac, open Safari > Settings and choose the relevant pane. The setting you need depends on whether you want to change privacy protection, a website’s behavior, or Safari’s appearance—and turning off some protections has security or privacy costs.

Find the setting for the feature you want to change

Safari settings are organized by device and feature. iPhone and iPad put many browser controls in the Settings app. Mac divides them among panes such as Privacy, Websites, and Security. Some options apply broadly, while website settings can often be set for a specific site.

  • Privacy or security: Look for controls such as Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, Hide IP Address, or Fraudulent Website Warning.
  • Website behavior: Look for settings such as pop-up windows, autoplay, camera, microphone, or location permissions.
  • Appearance: Change Start Page items or use Reader when available. These change what you see, not tracker protections.

Change Safari settings on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps, then Safari.
  3. Find the setting you want and change it. Apple lists options including Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, Hide IP Address, and Fraudulent Website Warning. For camera, microphone, and location access, choose the available permission—such as Ask, Deny, or Allow—rather than assuming each is a simple on/off switch. See Apple’s iPhone privacy instructions and iPad privacy instructions.

Turn Block Pop-ups on or off

Go to Settings > Apps > Safari, then turn Block Pop-ups on or off. Some websites use pop-up windows for legitimate functions, so blocking them can interfere with a site. If a pop-up looks suspicious or a page seems to take over the screen, don’t tap its buttons or links; close the tab or navigate to a known address instead. Apple’s guidance is in Block pop-up ads and windows in Safari.

Change a setting for one website

When available, open the site in Safari, tap the Page Menu, then choose Website Settings. Use the site-specific choices to adjust how that website behaves without changing the same setting for every site. The options shown depend on the setting and site.

Reduce visual clutter

To change the iPhone Start Page rather than privacy behavior, customize items such as Suggestions, Privacy Report, Reading List, and Favorites. When a page supports it, Safari’s Page Menu also offers Reader for a less cluttered reading view. These presentation options do not disable tracking protections. See Apple’s iPhone Safari customization guide.

Change Safari settings on Mac

  1. Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings from the menu bar.
  2. Select the pane that matches the setting: Privacy for tracking and cookie controls, Websites for site behavior and permissions, or Security for JavaScript and fraudulent-site warnings.
  3. Change the relevant option. For settings in Websites, select a category and choose a behavior for a listed site or for other websites, where that option is available.

Apple documents the Mac panes in Change settings in Safari on Mac, with details for Privacy settings and Website settings. The Website settings guide is for macOS 26.0.

Set behavior for a website

In Safari > Settings > Websites, choose a category such as Reader, Content Blockers, Auto-Play, Notifications, Pop-up Windows, camera, microphone, screen sharing, or location. Set the option for a particular site or, when offered, for other websites. Some sites rely on pop-ups for essential content, so blocking them may prevent a feature from working.

Adjust JavaScript or fraudulent-site warnings

Open Safari > Settings > Security to find the option that allows websites to use JavaScript and the Fraudulent Website Warning setting. Disabling JavaScript can affect site functionality. Turning off the warning means Safari will no longer alert you about suspected phishing sites; leave it on unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Understand the trade-offs before disabling privacy protections

Turning off Prevent Cross-Site Tracking allows cross-site tracking. On Mac, Apple describes the feature as periodically deleting tracking data from third-party content providers, except providers you visit. Safari also uses a simplified system configuration to reduce fingerprinting; that is not a guarantee of anonymity. Details are in Apple’s Mac Privacy settings guide.

Likewise, disabling Fraudulent Website Warning removes Safari’s warnings about suspected phishing sites. If you are trying to fix one troublesome website, prefer a site-specific setting in Websites or Website Settings over disabling a browser-wide protection.

If unwanted pop-ups keep appearing

Persistent pop-ups can be associated with adware or other unwanted software. Don’t click a suspicious pop-up, its apparent close button, or a download offer inside it. Apple recommends keeping your software updated and checking Applications and Safari Extensions for software you don’t recognize or no longer need. Follow Apple’s pop-up troubleshooting guidance if the problem continues.
