You may be able to pay with UPI at selected overseas merchants, but UPI is not accepted everywhere abroad. To use it, you need an eligible Indian bank account, a supported UPI app with UPI Global or UPI International enabled for that account, and a merchant that accepts a participating UPI or network QR. Check availability, limits, exchange rate and fees with your bank and app before you travel.
What paying with UPI abroad means
For an Indian resident traveling overseas, UPI Global Acceptance is a way to make QR-code payments at selected international merchant locations. The payment is authorized in an enabled UPI app and debited from the linked Indian bank account. It is not a promise that UPI will work at every merchant—or throughout any country where a payment-network partnership has been announced. NPCI describes the service as available at select international merchant locations.
A partner country, remittance corridor or general UPI announcement does not by itself establish that tourist-facing QR merchant payments are available there. A Government of India factsheet dated 24 August 2026 says UPI is live in 11 foreign countries for “UPI Acceptance and/or Cross Border Remittances”; because it combines those two categories, it is not a count of countries where an outbound traveler can pay merchants by QR.
How to prepare and pay
- Before departure, check eligibility. In the UPI app linked to the Indian bank account you intend to use, look for UPI Global or UPI International. If the option is available, activate it for that specific account. NPCI directs users to activate the service through a UPI-powered application and to consult current country, bank and app information. Confirm the feature with your bank or app provider because support can change.
- At the merchant, confirm acceptance. Look for a BHIM UPI or participating network-partner acceptance mark and ask whether the merchant accepts UPI. A generic QR code is not proof that the merchant participates in UPI Global Acceptance.
- Scan using the enabled app. Review the payment details before proceeding. Check the amount in the merchant’s currency and its INR equivalent, along with any exchange rate or fee displayed.
- Authorize in the app. Enter your UPI PIN only in the payment authorization flow. NPCI cautions users not to share their PIN; a merchant or support agent should not need it.
- Keep a fallback payment method. UPI may not be available at a particular merchant, and connectivity problems or app, bank or network outages can interrupt a payment.
Which countries accept UPI?
There is no reliable basis here for treating an entire country as covered for outbound QR purchases. Actual availability depends on the destination, participating payment network and merchant, as well as the bank account and app. Use NPCI’s UPI Global Acceptance information and confirm with your bank and app shortly before travel. A country’s appearance in an NRI phone-number linkage list is not evidence that its merchants accept UPI.

What is the UPI limit when traveling abroad?
Do not assume the usual domestic UPI ceiling applies to overseas merchant payments. NPCI’s FAQ gives a general domestic ceiling of INR 1 lakh per transaction, with higher limits for certain categories, but that does not establish the limit for UPI Global Acceptance. The reviewed official information does not provide a universal outbound international cap. Your bank or app may set transaction or daily limits, and destination or merchant-category rules may also matter.
Before leaving, ask your bank or app provider for the applicable per-transaction and daily limits. At checkout, use the exact amount and any currency conversion or fee shown in the app to decide whether to authorize the payment.

Exchange rates and fees
Review the INR amount, foreign-currency amount, exchange rate and any fee shown before confirming. The final cost depends on the terms applying to your account and payment; the reviewed official sources do not establish a universal rate or fee for outbound UPI payments. Do not assume UPI will cost less than a card or cash without comparing current, like-for-like charges.
UPI for NRIs and UPI One World are different services
NRIs linking an international mobile number
NPCI says NRIs with eligible NRE or NRO accounts may be able to link an eligible international mobile number and onboard through a supporting app, subject to bank terms. NPCI’s NRI guidance and live-member directory list supported banks, apps and mobile-number country codes. The directory includes numbers from Australia (+61), Canada (+1), France (+33), Hong Kong (+852), Malaysia (+60), Oman (+968), Qatar (+974), Saudi Arabia (+966), Singapore (+65), UAE (+971), the UK (+44) and the US (+1). These are phone-number onboarding details, not a list of destinations where overseas merchants accept UPI.

UPI One World for visitors to India
UPI One World is a wallet service for international visitors paying participating merchants in India; it does not enable an Indian resident to pay abroad. In a pilot announced by NPCI for invited visitors at the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026, guests could onboard using the CheqUPI app, passport and visa details, and a selfie, then load the wallet from an international card. That event’s terms allowed a maximum INR 25,000 per load, no more than two loads per month, and INR 50,000 in total monthly loads. These were pilot terms for that event, not outbound payment limits or a universal One World limit.

The Government of India’s figure of 11 foreign countries combines UPI acceptance and cross-border remittances, so it cannot establish the number of overseas tourist-payment destinations. NPCI also reported 21.70 billion UPI transactions worth INR 28.33 lakh crore in January 2026, but that ecosystem-wide activity figure does not measure international merchant acceptance. The reviewed official information does not establish a share of overseas merchants accepting UPI, how many Indian travelers use it abroad, or a universal outbound limit.
