In OpenLogi, select your MX Master 4, open Buttons, choose a control in the diagram, and assign an action. Use the gesture editor for supported controls, and adjust wheel behavior in the scrolling and pointer settings. Quit Logitech Options+ before launching OpenLogi: the two applications compete for HID++ access, so only one can own a receiver at a time.

Before you start

OpenLogi supports the MX Master 4 and documents support for macOS, Linux, and Windows, using a Logi Bolt, Unifying, or Lightspeed receiver, Bluetooth, or USB connection. Its documentation identifies v0.8.11 as the published baseline and says it was updated October 3, 2026. OpenLogi also warns that it is under active development and not yet stable, so labels and options may change between releases. See OpenLogi’s introduction and compatibility guidance.

  • Quit Logitech Options+ before opening OpenLogi. On Linux, close Solaar as well; these applications can compete for HID++ access.
  • On macOS, grant Accessibility permission for OpenLogi’s operating-system-level remapping. On Linux, install the package’s udev rules.
  • If a feature or control is missing, run openlogi diag features. The connected mouse’s reported feature table determines which options OpenLogi can expose.

Remap MX Master 4 buttons

  1. Open OpenLogi and select the MX Master 4 from the device gallery.
  2. Open the Buttons tab.
  3. Select a button hotspot or its label card in the interactive mouse diagram.
  4. Choose an action from the searchable action picker. Documented choices include copy and paste, Mission Control, media keys, Back and Forward, and cycling DPI presets.
  5. To customize behavior for an application, select that app in the profile selector and edit its button override. Unchanged buttons inherit the default profile.
  6. Save your changes. OpenLogi can also store settings in the device’s TOML configuration; use the physical-device key generated for your mouse rather than copying the illustrative key below.

Left and right click always pass through; other supported controls can be remapped and assigned per app. The GUI handles action selection, while some parameterized actions, such as custom shortcuts and scripts, may require editing the configuration file directly. OpenLogi’s button remapping guide explains the editor and configuration options.

MiddleClick = "MissionControl"
DpiToggle = { SetDpiPreset = 2 }
HapticPanel = "ShowActionsRing"
Back = { CustomShortcut = "Cmd+Shift+P" }

This is an illustrative configuration, not a universal device identifier or a recommendation for these particular actions.

Set up gestures

OpenLogi supports independent gesture maps on Back, Forward, the dedicated Gesture Button, and the Haptic Sense panel. Mode-shift/DPI can also support gestures if the connected mouse reports raw-XY support. The thumb wheel does not support gesture mode. OpenLogi no longer offers new middle-click gesture maps, though an older saved map can remain editable until disabled.

A gesture map has five arms: Up, Down, Left, Right, and Click. Multiple controls can have gesture mode enabled simultaneously. OpenLogi’s remapping guide describes recognition as holding the control for more than 160 ms and moving at least 50 raw-XY units on the dominant axis; a quick tap triggers Click on release. These are implementation details that may change in later releases.

Those eligibility rules describe Options+, not OpenLogi’s editor. See Logitech’s MX Master 4 support guide.

Adjust scroll behavior

OpenLogi exposes host-side scrolling preferences separately from settings written to the mouse. The main wheel, its ratchet/free-spin behavior, and the thumb wheel are also distinct controls.

Main wheel: smoothness, sensitivity, and direction

App-wide smooth scrolling is off by default. Vertical scroll sensitivity uses a 1–100 scale; OpenLogi documents 14 as 1×. Continuous pixel input from a native trackpad is neither smoothed nor scaled. Per-device options include supported scroll inversion and wheel resolution: device default, standard, or high resolution. These device settings are separate from app-wide smooth scrolling and sensitivity. See OpenLogi’s scrolling guide.

Main wheel: ratchet and free-spin

SmartShift controls the main wheel’s transition between ratchet and free-spin. OpenLogi’s MX Master 4 guide identifies SmartShift Enhanced support and shows configuration fields for its mode and auto-disengage behavior. Logitech Options+ offers separate controls: Logitech says users can disable SmartShift for manual mode switching, adjust the sensitivity threshold for automatic free-spin, and adjust scrolling force. These are software-specific controls, not interchangeable labels or settings.

Thumb wheel: horizontal scrolling and sensitivity

The thumb wheel is a separate horizontal input. OpenLogi binds its rotation directions with ThumbwheelScrollUp and ThumbwheelScrollDown, and supports app-wide or per-device sensitivity. Its native convention is physical up/forward for scrolling left and physical down/backward for scrolling right.

The Thumbwheel tap is a capacitive contact report, not a mechanical click. OpenLogi leaves it unbound by default because incidental thumb contact while turning the wheel can register taps. Logitech Options+ separately supports thumb-wheel speed and direction settings, along with app-specific actions such as horizontal scrolling, zoom, brush size, timeline navigation, browser tab switching, volume, or custom keystrokes.

Bind the Haptic Sense panel to Actions Ring

OpenLogi can bind the MX Master 4’s Haptic Sense panel to ShowActionsRing. Actions Ring is an eight-slot radial launcher; layouts can vary by foreground application. OpenLogi documents default actions including Cut, Copy, Paste, Browser Forward and Back, Play/Pause, Undo, and Redo. The ring can use haptic feedback when the device reports the required feature. Its default MX Master 4 trigger is the Haptic Sense panel, but another rebindable control can be assigned to open it. See OpenLogi’s Actions Ring guide.

When a control or setting is unavailable

  • Run openlogi diag features and check the connected unit’s feature report. OpenLogi uses that report to determine which feature panels and options are available.
  • Confirm the connection is through a supported receiver, Bluetooth, or USB, and that the mouse appears in OpenLogi’s device gallery.
  • Close Logitech Options+; on Linux, close Solaar too. A competing HID++ application can prevent OpenLogi from accessing the device.
  • Check the required operating-system permissions: Accessibility on macOS or package udev rules on Linux.

OpenLogi’s device guide lists the MX Master 4 controls as Middle click, Mode-shift (DPI) button, Thumb wheel, Gesture button, Forward, Back, and Haptic Sense panel. Availability of related features—including reprogrammable controls, thumb wheel, SmartShift Enhanced, HiResWheel, DPI presets, and haptics—depends on what the connected unit reports. See the MX Master 4 device guide and the supported-device list.

OpenLogi or Logitech Options+?

Both can configure MX Master 4 controls, but their documented scope differs. OpenLogi supports Linux as well as macOS and Windows, exposes editable TOML configuration, and supports sparse per-app overrides. Logitech documents app-specific presets and its own gesture and scrolling controls. Gesture eligibility and wheel settings are specific to each application’s implementation. Because both can compete for HID++ access, quit one before using the other.
