OpenLogi needs more than permission to edit a settings file to customize a Logitech mouse. Its background agent communicates with supported devices through Logitech’s HID++ protocol, while button remapping also relies on operating-system input capture and event synthesis. The project says it has no account or telemetry and stores settings locally, but it documents some network activity. Its maintainers also warn that OpenLogi is still under active development and is not yet stable. Those claims are not a substitute for an independent security audit.

What access does OpenLogi need?

OpenLogi separates device communication from input remapping. The background agent handles the device inventory and settings writes; operating-system input facilities let the app detect a mouse action and generate the action assigned to it. Which features are available depends on the particular mouse and what it exposes.

  • HID++ device access: Needed to identify supported devices and read or change their settings. The project lists Logi Bolt, Unifying receivers, Bluetooth, and wired connections.
  • Input capture and event generation: Needed for button remapping, which intercepts an input and synthesizes the assigned action. OpenLogi’s architecture documentation maps this to macOS CGEventTap, Linux evdev/uinput, and Windows low-level mouse hooks.
  • Linux device-node access: OpenLogi says its Linux packages install udev rules granting the user access to /dev/hidraw*, /dev/uinput, and the Logitech mouse’s /dev/input/event* node, so the app need not run as root.

The architecture guide also describes a permissions component that reports permission status and links to System Settings. Its camera-permission APIs relate to webcam features, not the mouse-customization use case. The project materials reviewed do not enumerate every current macOS or Windows prompt, so exact prompt names and requirements may depend on the release and operating-system version.

Is OpenLogi safe to install?

There are useful safeguards, but the available evidence does not establish that OpenLogi is risk-free. The project publishes its source under the MIT or Apache 2.0 license, making it available for inspection; public source alone does not prove a downloaded binary matches that source or that the software has no vulnerabilities. No independent security audit is established here.

The repository explicitly warns: “OpenLogi is under active development and not yet stable — features and config may still change.” Treat that as a meaningful qualification, especially if you depend on consistent mouse behavior for work. A feature or configuration may change as development continues.

For installation integrity, the project describes signed and notarized macOS disk-image downloads. Its Linux instructions document package-signature verification with minisign and release-checksum checks. These steps can help verify an installation, but they are not security audits. The repository also describes a signed Windows installer or archive; follow the current release’s platform-specific instructions rather than assuming all packages have identical verification steps. What does OpenLogi do with your data and network connection?

The maintainers describe OpenLogi as requiring no account and using no telemetry. Its architecture documentation says there is no cloud account and that configuration is stored locally in a TOML file. The configuration documentation’s search extract says the app makes one HEAD request to GitHub’s latest-release endpoint per launch to check for a newer version; it does not download the update through that check. The repository also describes fetching device images as network activity.

These are statements from the project, not independently measured network behavior. Configuration being local does not mean the app makes no network requests. The configuration page was not directly accessible in the source review, so treat the precise update-check implementation as less certain than the repository and architecture claims. Will OpenLogi work with your Logitech mouse?

Do not assume compatibility just because a device is made by Logitech. OpenLogi supports particular devices and features, and the available controls depend on what each device exposes. Check the current supported-device information for your exact mouse model and confirm that it supports the feature you want—such as changing a setting or remapping a button—before installing on that basis. The project describes itself as an alternative to Logitech Options+, not as a universal replacement for every Logitech mouse.

How to make a cautious installation decision

  1. Check the exact model and required feature. Confirm both against the project’s current device-support information; brand alone is not enough.
  2. Review the permissions relevant to your platform. Device access enables settings changes, while input capture and synthesis enable remapping. On Linux, review the package’s documented udev rules and verification steps.
  3. Use the current release’s official installation instructions. Follow the applicable macOS signing and notarization information, Linux signature and checksum checks, or Windows release guidance.
  4. Decide whether active development is acceptable. If a stable, independently audited tool is a requirement, the project’s stated development status and the absence of an established independent audit are reasons to wait or choose another approach.
