Start with NASA’s Perseverance raw-image browser to find and download rover pictures. Choose a camera and narrow by date or Martian day (sol); read the caption before interpreting what you see. For cataloged instrument data or scientific analysis, use the relevant Planetary Data System (PDS) collection and check its product label and documentation. A browser image, a raw archive product, and a calibrated or derived scientific product are not interchangeable.
Why Jezero’s images matter
Perseverance landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. NASA’s mission objectives include studying Mars’ habitability, seeking signs of past microbial life, collecting and caching samples, and preparing for future human missions. NASA describes Jezero as about 45 kilometers wide; river channels spilled into it and formed a lake more than 3.5 billion years ago, carrying clay minerals into the crater. That setting makes the rover’s observations scientifically valuable, but it is not evidence by itself that life existed there. NASA Science’s Perseverance mission overview explains the mission and its geological context.
Browse and download images on NASA’s site
The raw-image browser is the most approachable place to explore returned imagery. Its interactive features require JavaScript enabled in your browser. The page includes engineering cameras such as Navcam and Hazcam as well as science-camera categories, including Mastcam-Z, MEDA SkyCam, PIXL MCC, SHERLOC, and SuperCam. Controls include camera, date and sol filters, raw and color-processed labels, and thumbnail and movie-frame options. Not every image necessarily has both a raw and a color-processed version.
- Open the image browser. Go to NASA’s Perseverance raw-image page. If its controls do not load, check that JavaScript is enabled.
- Narrow the results. Select a camera family and, if useful, a date or sol range. A sol is a Martian day, the time unit used in mission records.
- Check the caption and camera name. Use these to orient yourself to what the camera recorded and to distinguish engineering-camera views from science-instrument observations.
- Choose a view and download. The page supports browsing individual images and selecting multiple images. Thumbnails are reduced-resolution versions of the original full-size images, so download the full-size file when detail matters.
The browser’s “raw” and “color-processed” labels help you discover imagery; they do not, on their own, establish scientific calibration or the file’s full processing history. Treat the image and its caption as a starting point, and use archive metadata when the analysis depends on exactly what product you have.

Choose the right route: browser or PDS
| Route | Best for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NASA raw-image browser | Finding, viewing, and downloading returned images with camera and date or sol filters. | Camera name, caption, and whether the item is a thumbnail, movie frame, or full-size image. The browser’s labels do not certify calibration. NASA raw-image page. |
| PDS catalog and collections | Finding cataloged products by instrument and product class, including raw engineering-camera products and browse products for science instruments. | Collection, product label, instrument, and documentation; a PDS file is not automatically a ready-to-interpret photograph. PDS Imaging Node, with relevant catalog records below. |
Find instrument products in the PDS archive
Use PDS when you need cataloged products and their instrument or processing context rather than simply a convenient image to view. The records distinguish data collections from browse collections and identify the product classes and instruments included. For example, the cited engineering-camera bundle contains raw Hazcam products. A separate image-operations browse collection lists browse products for PIXL MCC, SHERLOC ACI/WATSON, and SuperCam RMI.
- Mars 2020 engineering-camera raw bundle: consult the record and product metadata for raw Hazcam products.
- Mars 2020 image-operations browse collection: the catalog lists browse products for PIXL MCC, SHERLOC ACI/WATSON, and SuperCam RMI.
Follow each record to its collection details and documentation, then inspect the individual product label. The instrument or collection name alone does not tell you everything about a file’s processing level or whether it is suitable for measurement.

When Mastcam-Z data can support analysis
Mastcam-Z is a variable-focal-length, multispectral stereo camera investigation. Its 4:1 zoom, 11 unique narrow bands, and 24.4-centimeter camera-head stereo baseline are specifications reported in the 2020 instrument paper, not promises that every image contains a measurable feature. The camera’s observations include more than scenic views: calibrated radiance and radiance-factor imagery is archived for public release, and stereo processing can produce 3D topography for geological interpretation.
For scientific measurements, use the relevant archived products and documentation rather than assuming an image in the browser is analysis-ready. Product level, processing, camera resolution, and the method used to derive a result all constrain what can be inferred. Bell and colleagues describe the instrument and data products in the Mastcam-Z investigation paper; related work on calibrated imagery and geological analysis appears in their 2022 Science Advances paper.

A practical way to interpret a frame
- Identify the instrument. A Hazcam or Navcam frame serves a different role from an observation made by Mastcam-Z, PIXL, SHERLOC, or SuperCam.
- Keep the product type in view. A reduced thumbnail, a browser view, a raw archive product, and a calibrated or derived product have different purposes.
- Use metadata for claims about measurements. For color, geometry, or geological interpretation, check the product label and documentation for processing and instrument context.
- Separate geological context from evidence of life. Jezero’s ancient lake history makes it a compelling place to investigate habitability; a landscape image or evidence of water alone does not demonstrate past microbial life.
