Because some growth-stock valuations depend heavily on profits expected years from now, those valuations can be especially sensitive to a higher discount rate. But a yield increase is not an automatic sell signal: if yields rise because investors expect stronger long-run growth, that may also improve companies’ expected cash flows.
Why higher Treasury yields can lower stock valuations
A share’s value reflects the cash investors expect the company to generate in the future, adjusted for the time and risk involved in receiving it. The Federal Reserve describes asset prices in terms of discounted expected future payoffs: all else equal, a higher discount rate lowers the present value of those payoffs. The Fed’s May 2021 Financial Stability Report explains this valuation framework.
Treasury yields matter because they help shape the return investors can earn from a comparatively safe asset and the rates used to value other investments. When yields rise, investors may demand a higher expected return to hold stocks. If a company’s share price already depends on substantial future growth, a higher discount rate can weigh more heavily on its valuation than it would on a business whose cash flows are expected sooner.
This is a valuation relationship, not a rule that stock prices must fall whenever a Treasury yield rises. A higher yield can also reflect better expectations for economic growth, which may improve expected company cash flows. The Fed has noted that valuation pressure from rising rates depends on the economic outlook, rather than on the rate move alone. Its May 2019 report discusses that conditional relationship.

Why the reason yields rose matters
The 10-year Treasury yield is not a single-purpose signal. Its movement can reflect changing expectations for future interest rates and inflation, as well as compensation investors require for holding long-term bonds. Those components can have different implications for stocks.
Yields rise with stronger growth expectations
If investors expect stronger long-run growth, Treasury yields may rise while businesses’ expected revenues or profits also improve. Federal Reserve researchers Martijn Boons, Anthony M. Diercks, Petra Sinagl, and Andrea Tamoni report that a positive long-run growth shock increased expected dividend growth while leaving discount rates largely unchanged in their June 2026 discussion paper. Growth-firm equity yields responded more strongly than value-firm yields, reflecting larger changes in expected dividend growth. The finding illustrates that a growth-related shock can affect expected cash flows as well as valuations; it does not establish how every technology or AI stock will react to a Treasury-yield move. Yields rise with higher risk premiums
A yield increase driven by greater compensation for risk can raise discount rates without bringing the same improvement in expected company cash flows. In a February 12, 2026 note, Federal Reserve Board researchers Daniel Covitz and Eric Engstrom attributed the recent increase in far-forward Treasury rates primarily to higher real far-forward risk premiums, which they associated with perceived adverse supply-shock and federal-deficit risks. Their analysis is specific to that note and its model; it is not a universal explanation for every yield increase.
The researchers reported that the 10-year yield had remained somewhat above 4 percent over the preceding year and a half despite 175 basis points of FOMC target-rate cuts. That is a historical observation in their publication context, not a current Treasury quote. They also estimated that more than 80 percent of the variation in annual changes in the 10-year yield over the past 50 years was explained by changes in the 9-to-10-year forward rate in a simple regression. That is a statistical result, not a causal share of yield movements. Their model estimated an increase of about 200 basis points in the total far-forward risk premium over the past few years, attributed to the rise in real far-forward risk premiums. See the February 2026 note.

Why technology and AI stocks can be more sensitive
Technology and AI companies are not one uniform group, and the available Federal Reserve evidence does not give a numeric AI-stock-specific sensitivity to Treasury yields. The useful question is what a company’s valuation depends on, not whether it carries a technology or AI label.
- Cash-flow timing: A valuation that relies more on distant expected cash flows is more exposed to a change in the discount rate, all else equal.
- Growth outlook: A yield increase tied to stronger expected growth may coincide with better expected cash flows; an increase tied to a higher risk premium may not.
- Financing exposure: Leverage, floating-rate debt, refinancing needs, and the ability to cover interest costs affect how higher borrowing costs reach a business.
- Valuation starting point: If a share price already embeds ambitious expectations, a change in the return investors require can matter more to the price.
These are analytical dimensions, not a ranking of named AI companies. The cited sources do not compare individual AI issuers on these measures.

How borrowing costs can add pressure
Higher long-term Treasury rates can also raise the cost of some long-term credit. Covitz and Engstrom write: “The increase in far-forward rates is consequential for the economy because higher forward rates mean higher long-term Treasury yields, which boosts the current cost of long-term credit to households and businesses.” The effect on a particular company depends on its financing and debt terms; a Treasury move does not automatically change every technology company’s borrowing cost by the same amount.
The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report draws a distinction between firms’ debt-service positions. It reports solid interest coverage for publicly traded firms in aggregate, while debt-servicing capacity was lower for some non-investment-grade public and riskier private firms, especially those relying on floating-rate debt. Those findings do not support treating all large technology companies as equally dependent on rate-sensitive borrowing. Read the report’s financial-stability section.

What current valuation data does—and does not—say
In its May 2026 Financial Stability Report, the Federal Reserve said S&P 500 forward price-to-earnings valuations remained in the upper range of their historical distribution. The measure uses expected earnings for the next 12 months and describes the broad S&P 500, not AI stocks specifically.
The report also gave a historical median of 4.59 percentage points for its measure of the S&P 500 forward earnings-to-price ratio minus expected real Treasury yields. That is a historical median, not the report’s current observation or a forecast. It is one way of comparing equity earnings yields with expected real Treasury yields, not a complete explanation of stock prices or an AI valuation statistic. See the May 2026 report.
How to interpret a yield move without treating it as a forecast
- Identify the yield and time frame. A change in the 10-year yield, a short-term policy rate, and a far-forward rate are not interchangeable.
- Ask what is driving the move. Consider whether the change reflects stronger growth expectations, higher risk premiums, or other forces; the same yield change can carry different implications.
- Consider the company’s cash flows. Weigh how much of the valuation depends on distant growth expectations and whether those expectations may also be changing.
- Check financing exposure. Debt terms, floating-rate borrowing, refinancing needs, and interest coverage determine whether higher long-term rates are likely to affect the company’s costs.
- Keep market-wide measures in scope. S&P 500 valuation data can describe broad conditions, but it cannot establish the valuation or rate sensitivity of a specific AI company.
The result is a framework for understanding pressure on valuations, not a reliable way to predict the next move in a particular stock.
