Keep AI API keys on a trusted server, never in browser or mobile-app code, and limit each key to the access it needs. Store credentials securely, restrict and rotate them, and monitor usage. Billing alerts can help you spot a spike, but they are not necessarily hard spending caps.
Why an exposed API key can cost you
An API key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to make requests using your account and permissions. OpenAI warns that exposing a key in a browser or mobile app can let malicious users make requests on your behalf, potentially leading to unexpected charges or access to account data (OpenAI Help Center, “Best Practices for API Key Safety”). Google likewise warns that publicly exposed keys can result in unexpected charges or unauthorized data access (Google Cloud, “Best practices for managing API keys”).
Protect the credential itself, but also reduce the harm a stolen key could do: limit where it works, what it can access, and how long it remains valid. Then watch for usage that does not match your application.
Keep keys out of clients, code, and URLs
Make secret-bearing API calls from a backend
Do not embed a secret key in JavaScript delivered to a browser or in a mobile application. A user can inspect client software and extract credentials embedded in it. Instead, have the application send a request to your backend; the backend makes the provider API call using a secret supplied through its deployment environment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This keeps the key on the trusted side of the application boundary. It does not make the backend automatically safe: limit access to its runtime secrets and avoid logging credentials or returning them to clients.
Keep credentials out of the source tree
Do not commit a key to a repository or store it in a file within the source tree. Google recommends environment variables or files outside the source tree; for production, use a secrets manager or a cloud deployment’s secret-delivery facility where appropriate (Google Cloud, “Best practices for managing API keys”). These approaches help separate the secret from application code and control which workload can receive it.
If a key was committed, removing it from the latest version of the code is not enough: it may remain in repository history or have been copied already. Revoke or replace the exposed key and review its usage.

Do not put keys in URLs
A URL query parameter can appear in places such as logs and URL scans. Google specifically warns against passing API keys in query parameters; use the provider’s recommended header or client library instead (Google Cloud, “Best practices for managing API keys”).
Use individual credentials for people
Do not distribute one personal key across a team. OpenAI recommends unique keys and individual member access, with permissions assigned to keys as appropriate (OpenAI Help Center, “Best Practices for API Key Safety”). Individual credentials make it easier to limit access and remove one person’s access without replacing a shared team secret.
Limit what a key can do
Use the narrowest restrictions your provider and application support. Depending on the provider, that might mean limiting a key to a project or workspace, particular APIs or permissions, a specific application, or trusted IP addresses. OpenAI documents IP allowlisting, Google documents API and application restrictions, and Anthropic documents workspace scoping:

Do not assume every provider offers the same controls or that a restriction is enabled by default. Check the current key settings for your account, and remove keys that are no longer needed.
Consider short-lived credentials where supported
For supported workloads, workload identity federation or other short-lived credentials can reduce reliance on a long-lived static key. OpenAI and Anthropic document this approach for supported workloads; Google recommends considering IAM policies and short-lived service-account credentials in applicable cases. Availability and setup depend on the provider and workload, so confirm that your use case is supported before designing around it.

Set an expiration and rotation process
Where a provider supports expiration, set it to fit your operational needs and define a rotation schedule. To rotate without an avoidable outage, create a replacement, update the application, verify that it works, and then revoke the old key. Keep the replacement protected during the transition.

Expiration and rotation reduce the period in which a leaked credential may remain useful; they do not replace secure storage or access restrictions. Anthropic puts the distinction plainly: “Expiration limits the lifetime of a leaked credential, but it is not a substitute for secret hygiene” (Anthropic Claude Platform Docs, “Authentication”).
If a key may have leaked, disable or revoke it
- Disable or revoke the suspect key promptly. Do not wait to confirm whether it has been abused. If the provider offers reversible disablement, that may be available while you investigate; permanent deletion may also be offered.
- Replace it in the application. Create a new credential with the required scope, update the trusted workload, and verify that requests succeed.
- Review usage. Look for activity that does not match your expected application, timing, or volume.
- Contact the provider if you find unauthorized use. OpenAI advises users concerned about misuse to rotate the key and contact support for investigation (OpenAI Help Center, “Best Practices for API Key Safety”).
Monitor usage without mistaking alerts for a cap
Review API usage regularly and configure the spending controls or notifications your provider offers. Features differ: OpenAI says spend alerts alone do not stop traffic, and hard enforcement may take time or interrupt legitimate requests. Anthropic’s help article describes usage limits and automatic credit replenishment settings, while Google’s Gemini key guidance recommends billing alerts for usage or cost spikes.
These controls can help you detect or manage usage, but the available documentation does not establish a cross-provider guarantee that an alert or configured budget will prevent every charge. Check what a specific setting actually does, when enforcement takes effect, and whether it can block legitimate requests.

Choose controls that fit your setup
When comparing ways to manage a credential, assess the exposure surface, scope, lifetime, operational effort, and cost-control behavior. A server-side secret is less exposed than one delivered to clients; a narrowly scoped key limits its reach; short-lived credentials reduce the useful life of a stolen secret. Balance those protections against the work required to deliver, rotate, and monitor credentials reliably.
Before relying on a billing control, establish whether it merely sends a notification or enforces a limit, how quickly it acts, and what happens to legitimate requests at the threshold. Provider interfaces and behavior can change, so confirm current settings in your provider’s console and documentation.
