Use the feature to step away from a session; rely on the game’s save system for lasting progress. If you use Steam Cloud or move between devices, make sure synchronization finishes and handle any conflict carefully.
What Quick Resume does—and what it does not do
Valve describes SteamOS quick suspend/resume as a way to get quickly in and out of games. It preserves a running session for convenience, but it is not a substitute for the game’s own save system. A suspended session may not protect progress if a game closes, the Deck restarts, or the game encounters a problem.
Valve’s SteamOS overview describes the feature here: Steam Deck FAQ. The official documentation cited here does not specify a button press or menu sequence for suspending and resuming a game, so use the current on-device controls rather than relying on an assumed shortcut.
How to use suspend and resume safely
- Save in the game first. Use the game’s save option or reach a checkpoint when possible. Whether progress is saved automatically, manually, or at checkpoints depends on the game.
- Use SteamOS quick suspend/resume to leave the session. Follow the suspend control shown by your Deck’s current interface; do not treat suspension as a new save.
- Resume and check the game. Confirm that the session is still where you expect it to be. If it is not, use the game’s own save or checkpoint system to recover the latest available progress.
- Before switching devices, let Steam Cloud finish syncing. Check that the game supports Cloud saves and that synchronization has completed before opening it elsewhere.
How Steam Cloud affects your saved progress
Steam Cloud is available only for games that use it, and support does not guarantee that every kind of progress or setting is synchronized. Developers choose which files or data a game uploads. Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation explains that developers can customize how Cloud is used, including which user files are uploaded.

Check the game’s Steam Store page for its Steam Cloud indicator, and consult the game’s own save guidance to understand what is stored. A local save may be current on the Deck even when there is no corresponding cloud save.
What to do about offline play, sync errors, and conflicts
If you played offline
Offline play delays Steam Cloud synchronization until the Deck is online again. When you reconnect, allow the game’s Cloud sync to complete before launching it on another device. Steam Support explains the effect of offline play in its Steam Cloud FAQ.

If Steam reports a sync failure
Resolve the sync problem before launching the game if you can. Steam Support warns that ignoring a failed-sync notice and starting the game can create a conflict and lead to lost progress. Don’t assume that a failed upload means the latest save is already available in the cloud.
If Steam shows a save conflict
A conflict means the local and cloud files differ. Compare the dates shown in the prompt with where and when you last played, then select the version that contains the progress you want. Choosing without checking can replace the newer or intended save with an older one. If you are unsure, avoid launching the game until you have worked out which version is current.

If suspend or resume is unstable
For general Steam Deck software problems, Valve recommends installing available system updates, restarting the Deck, and exiting or disabling third-party applications before testing again. These are general troubleshooting steps, not a Quick Resume-specific fix. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide says its advice applies to both LCD and OLED models.
