If a projector picture is blurry or looks trapezoidal, first determine whether the issue is focus or image shape. Refocus with the projector’s model-specific control, then improve its placement and alignment before relying on digital keystone correction. If the picture is still soft, inspect the lens and check sharpness and source resolution.
Is the problem focus or image shape?
Display a menu, text, or another image with straight edges. If the whole picture looks uniformly soft, start with focus. If it is sharp in the center but soft at the edges—or one corner is unclear—check the projector’s placement and optical capabilities as well as focus. Keystone changes the image’s geometry; it does not correct a focus problem.
- Uniformly soft image: use the projector’s focus control.
- Trapezoidal or skewed image: improve the projector’s position and aim before applying keystone correction.
- Uneven sharpness: check placement and consult the manual for model-specific optical adjustments. A keystone setting alone may not explain why one area is less clear.
Refocus the image and check projection distance
Focus controls vary: a projector may have a focus ring or slider, a remote button, or an on-screen control. Use the manual for the exact model rather than assuming that another projector’s controls or limits apply.
For Epson EF21 and EF22 projectors, holding the remote’s Image focus button starts autofocus; pressing it opens the manual focus adjustment screen. Epson describes autofocus and automatic keystone correction for these models when the uncorrected image is 30–100 inches diagonally, the projector is about 28–87 inches (0.7–2.2 m) from the screen, and the installation angle is within 20 degrees right, left, up, or down. Also check that the projector is at a suitable distance for the image size you want. Moving it or reducing the projected image size may help if it is outside the model’s supported range. For an unevenly focused image, consult the manual about the projector’s lens and positioning options rather than trying to compensate with a large digital correction.
Fix keystone by improving alignment first
A projector aimed at the screen from an angle can produce a trapezoid. Move and aim it so the image is closer to square before applying digital keystone correction. This reduces reliance on automatic or manual correction, whose supported range varies by model.

BenQ summarizes the variables this way: “Factors such as projection angle, distance, and various settings all affect auto keystone correction’s ability to fix a distorted image.” Its GP100A FAQ gives one model-specific example: for a 100-inch screen, it describes automatic correction for up to 20 degrees of horizontal tilt and 13 degrees of vertical tilt at around 2.9 meters from the screen. If more adjustment or a more distant placement is needed, the FAQ says manual adjustment is required. These figures are not general limits for other projectors. See BenQ’s GP100A keystone guidance.
When should you use physical alignment or digital correction?

Some projectors automatically adjust image size and position using focus and keystone features. If the picture keeps changing after the projector is moved, or you want the image to remain fixed, check the manual or support page for the exact model and locale to find whether those features can be disabled and where their controls are. Menu paths and labels can differ among models.

Clean the lens and allow condensation to clear
A dirty lens can affect the picture. Epson recommends cleaning the projector lens as a troubleshooting step, but the safe method depends on the projector: follow its manual, and do not assume a particular liquid, cloth, or cleaner is approved. If the projector has just been brought in from a cold environment, Epson advises letting it warm to room temperature before use so condensation on the lens can clear. Check sharpness and the source resolution
If focus and placement are reasonable but the image still looks soft, check the projector’s Sharpness setting. For a computer source, Epson suggests trying a lower resolution or selecting a resolution that matches the projector’s native resolution. These are later checks: sharpness processing or a resolution change cannot correct physical focus or poor alignment. Epson’s EF21/EF22 FAQ covers these troubleshooting options.

What to do if focus or distortion will not correct
On the Epson EF21/EF22, Epson advises power-cycling the projector if focus or distortion cannot be corrected. If a warning screen appears, contact Epson support. For other models, consult the manufacturer’s support guidance for that projector; controls and recovery steps vary.
