To get notified when two averages cross, create a technical alert tied to an indicator or a script that compares the two average lines. This guide uses TradingView as a documented example. The same setup principles apply elsewhere, though menus and alert options vary by platform.
Choose the Bitcoin chart and timeframe
Open the BTC market chart you want to monitor, and select a specific symbol and feed—for example, a BTC/USD pair from a particular exchange. Different venues can show different prices and candles, so an alert on one feed may not match another.
Choose the chart interval before setting the averages. Moving-average lengths count bars on that interval: a 20-period average on a one-hour chart uses 20 hourly bars, not 20 days. The interval also affects when a crossover can be detected and whether it is still present when a bar closes.
Configure the two moving averages
Add two averages to the chart: one faster and one slower. Choose the averaging method—such as simple moving average (SMA) or exponential moving average (EMA)—and each length according to your own method. There is no universally best pair for Bitcoin. The chosen feed, interval, averaging method, and lengths all affect the signals.

Make sure the condition you create compares the two averages with each other. A condition for Bitcoin’s price crossing one moving average is different: it watches price versus an average, not a fast average versus a slow one.
Create a crossover alert in TradingView
TradingView supports indicator alerts either from the chart or through Alert manager. Its official documentation says, “Alerts can be created on data series, indicators, chart patterns, strategies, and drawing tools.”

- On the BTC chart, add and configure both moving averages.
- Right-click the relevant indicator and choose Add alert, or open Alert manager and create an alert with the indicator selected as its condition. TradingView documents both routes.
- Choose a condition that compares the fast and slow average series. The crossing operator determines whether the alert fires in either direction, only when the fast average crosses up, or only when it crosses down. Do not select a price-versus-average condition by mistake.
- If the built-in indicator condition does not let you compare the two averages as needed, use a custom Pine Script indicator with an explicit comparison. TradingView’s Pine Script FAQ shows the upward-cross pattern
ta.crossover(fastMa, slowMa). A downward condition compares the same series in the reverse direction. A custom script can expose these conditions, but you still create the alert in the alert dialog.
For both directions, create conditions for upward and downward crosses, or choose an either-direction crossing condition if the available indicator condition supports it. TradingView’s documented crossing operators distinguish those cases.
Set trigger behavior and notifications
In the alert dialog, select how often the condition can trigger. TradingView documents these choices: Only once, Every time, Once per bar close, and Once per minute. For a crossover that should count only if it remains at the close, choose a bar-close trigger. A trigger during an in-progress bar may report a cross that disappears before the bar completes; the appropriate choice depends on whether you want earlier, provisional notice or confirmation at the close.

Set an expiration date, use a clear label or message that identifies the BTC feed, timeframe, averages, and direction, and select the delivery options you will actually monitor. TradingView lists app notifications, browser toast notifications, email, webhook, sound, and plain text as options; availability may depend on how the alert is configured and your account.
Check that the alert is still active
After creating it, confirm the alert appears as active in Alert manager and note its expiration. TradingView says a standard alert can last no more than two months; Premium and Ultimate plans have an open-ended alert option. Plan features and interface details can change, so check the current [TradingView alert documentation] before relying on a particular duration or delivery option.

TradingView indicator alerts retain the settings in effect when the alert was created. If you change the average lengths, method, or script afterward, the existing alert may not reflect the new setup. Review the condition and recreate the alert when necessary. For custom indicators, TradingView also notes that defining alert conditions in a script does not itself activate an alert; it must still be created through the alert dialog. The alert reports that your selected technical condition occurred on the chart and feed you configured. It does not place an order, establish that Bitcoin will move in a particular direction, or guarantee a profitable result. TradingView recommends historical review and backtesting in its technical-alert documentation, but that is not evidence that any particular crossover rule works. No accuracy or profitability conclusion follows from the alert feature itself.
