These are preference cues, not a ranking of which game is better. The styles and gameplay emphasis differ, so the sensible choice is the version that matches what you want from an MMO.
What is the difference between RuneScape and Old School RuneScape?
They are two separate versions of RuneScape, not two modes sharing one character. Jagex explains that a single RuneScape account can access both versions, each with its own character profile. “Profile progress is completely independent, meaning that character information, stats, and items do not transfer between the two games.”
RuneScape is the current version. OSRS is based on the 2007 game and launched in 2013. Starting OSRS means beginning again with a fresh character, even if you have played RuneScape before.

The official RuneScape game page highlights skills, quests, combat, and world exploration. The OSRS homepage emphasizes challenging levelling and PvP where the stakes can include losing what you carry. Those descriptions help distinguish the versions, but they are not a guarantee that every player will prefer one over the other.
How to start playing
- Choose a version. Use the comparison above. If you are unsure, you can try one version first; choosing it does not transfer or combine progress with the other.
- Open the official OSRS download page: https://osrs.runescape.com/download. Select the listed route for your platform. The page offers the Jagex Launcher for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as Steam, the App Store, and the Play Store.
- For OSRS, use “Try Free” on the official Old School RuneScape site if you want to begin without membership. Follow the official download or launch option for your device.
- Start without buying membership. Membership is an optional expansion, not a prerequisite established for trying the free route. Consider it only after you know you want access to the additional content.
- If you are returning, launch RuneScape to look for your old profile and items. Starting OSRS instead creates a separate character from scratch.
Should a beginner get membership?
No need to make that decision before playing. Jagex describes membership as adding content: for RuneScape, the game-information page mentions extra quests and skills; the OSRS membership page lists member-only skills, regions, quests, bosses, and worlds. The exact benefits can change, and the official pages do not establish a membership price here.

Try the free-play route first if it is available for the version you chose. Upgrade only if the additional content is worth it to you. You do not need a special physical product to begin; the official OSRS download routes are digital.

Yes. A single RuneScape account can access RuneScape and OSRS, but the character profiles are separate. Stats, items, and progress in one version do not carry into the other. If you want to experience both, treat each as its own character and playthrough.
