Start by checking the filter and the air path, then inspect the bin and attachments as appropriate for your model. Dyson’s maintenance instructions differ between cordless, upright, and cylinder vacuums, so identify the exact model before removing or washing parts.
Check the filter first
Dust can build up in a filter and reduce performance. Dyson’s cordless filter-care guidance recommends washing the covered cordless filters at least once a month. Fine dust or frequent use in a high-power mode may mean they need cleaning more often, according to Dyson’s troubleshooting guidance.
Wash a cordless filter safely
- Switch off the vacuum and remove the filter as shown in the instructions for your model.
- Tap off loose dust, then rinse and gently clean the filter with cold tap water. Do not use detergent.
- Leave it in a well-ventilated place for at least 24 hours, or longer if it is not completely dry.
- Reinstall it only when fully dry. Dyson warns that a wet filter could damage the motor. Do not dry it in a tumble dryer, microwave, near a naked flame, or with another heat source.
These steps and the monthly interval are for the cordless filters covered by Dyson’s current care page, not every Dyson vacuum. For example, an older DC14 upright troubleshooting path recommends washing at least every three months and says not to remove or wash the permanent filter beneath that machine’s clear bin. Follow your own model’s instructions rather than applying cordless care steps to an upright or cylinder.
Look for a blockage in the airflow path
A clog can restrict suction and may also make a vacuum pulse or cut out. With the machine switched off and unplugged or disconnected as its manual specifies, inspect the airflow openings and the parts fitted to your model: the bin, wand, hose, and cleaner head. Remove visible debris without forcing tools into the machine or dismantling parts the instructions say to leave in place. Check the bin, tools, and power mode
Dyson’s troubleshooting pages for the V15 and V12 list several additional checks. Empty the bin when debris reaches the MAX line, make sure the selected power mode suits the cleaning task, and inspect the tools for dirt or obstructions. Dyson recommends cleaning tools with a microfiber cloth; follow the model instructions for cleaning the cyclone rather than assuming it can be removed or washed.
Understand pulsing or a sudden cut-out
A vacuum that pulses or stops may have restricted airflow. Dyson says many of its vacuums have a thermal cut-out and links overheating to a blocked machine or filters that need washing. If your machine cuts out, its troubleshooting guidance says to unplug it and let it cool for at least two hours, then complete the relevant filter and blockage checks before trying again. Use the recovery instructions for your exact model.

When basic checks do not restore suction
If the filter is clean and completely dry, the airflow path is clear, and the model-specific bin and tool checks have not helped, use the relevant Dyson support path or contact Dyson for advice. Suction loss alone does not establish that the motor or battery has failed. If support identifies a worn or damaged filter, match any replacement to the exact vacuum model; a drop in suction by itself is not a reason to buy one.

Filter location, whether a filter is washable, the cleaning interval, and which assemblies can be cleaned differ by model and generation. Find the model name or number on the machine and consult its instructions before removing parts, washing a filter, or ordering a replacement. Dyson’s cordless page says, “We suggest you clean your filter at least once a month to keep your machine running at maximum efficiency,” but that interval is not a universal schedule for every Dyson vacuum.
