A digital game must be downloaded; after that, it can be played offline on a PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, subject to the game’s features and license conditions.
How installation differs between disc and digital games

Installing a disc game
Insert the disc and allow the installation to finish, then select the game from Games home. The disc remains necessary as the launch medium; installation does not turn a disc purchase into a disc-free digital license. Some games include separate data and play discs. If prompted, swap discs as instructed and leave the play disc inserted after installation. PlayStation’s disc-installation guidance says to keep the disc inserted each time you play.
Downloading a digital game
PlayStation’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for CFI-71XX says purchasing and downloading games requires an internet connection and account sign-in. Once the download completes, the game is ready to play. Purchased games can also be downloaded to internal console storage using PlayStation App after signing in. PlayStation’s PS5 setup guidance explains using the app to manage internal storage.
What each format means for PS5 storage
Neither format lets you avoid installing game data on the console: disc games install to console storage, while digital games download there. If you run short on room, PlayStation says PS4 games can be stored and played from extended USB storage, but PS5 games cannot be played from an extended USB storage drive. A USB drive is therefore not a way to play PS5 games directly; consult PlayStation’s setup guidance for the supported storage behavior rather than assuming external storage works the same for both generations.

When you need an internet connection
Disc games
The cited disc-install instructions describe installation from the disc and do not state that internet is required for that basic process. That does not establish that every disc game can be fully installed and played offline: a particular title may need an update, an online account check, or internet for online modes or other features. Check the game’s own requirements if offline use is essential.
Digital games
Internet and sign-in are required to purchase and download a digital game. Downloaded does not mean permanently online, however: enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play allows users on that PS5 to play games and media purchased and downloaded by the enabling account while the console is offline. PlayStation allows this feature on one PS5 at a time. Subscription content may depend on the owner’s sharing setup and an active PlayStation Plus subscription, and a game’s online features still require whatever connection they specify. Which PS5 models support disc games?
A PS5 console with a disc drive supports PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray disc, as well as digital downloads. The Digital Edition has no disc drive by default, so it cannot launch a game disc unless a compatible optional drive is added.
Adding a drive to a Digital Edition
PlayStation identifies the CFI-ZDD1 series optional disc drive for slim Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups. Pairing the drive with the console during setup requires an internet connection. Do not assume this drive fits every Digital Edition: the official product page does not describe it as compatible with the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition. Choosing the format that fits how you play
- Choose discs if you want to use compatible physical games or already own them, and you are comfortable inserting the disc whenever you play. The game still occupies console storage.
- Choose digital if you prefer downloading and launching games without swapping discs, and can connect to the internet to purchase and download them. Offline play can be enabled on one PS5 through Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Check the console model if you want to play discs on a Digital Edition. Only the listed compatible slim models support the CFI-ZDD1 optional drive.
- Check the individual game if you need a particular offline mode, want to know its update requirements, or need to plan storage. Requirements and game sizes vary by title; the cited sources do not establish a universal download size, install time, or bandwidth threshold.
