For a broad early-game pick, the October 5, 2026 version 6.1.0 tier guide favors Aru; Rio is an intuitive character to learn with, and Lucas is a useful third option. Build a small, regularly used group, then adapt to the enemy’s element and the role you need rather than treating any tier list as permanent.
Which starting characters should you build first?
Your starting party is Rio, Lucas, and Aru. You control one main character and can switch to the two sub-characters during real-time combat, so investing in a compact team gives you options without requiring you to build every character at once. The beginner guide identifies Rio as a sword user, Lucas as a lance user, and Aru as a bow user. Pocket Gamer’s beginner guide explains the party and combat basics.
Aru: a strong early pick for ranged play
The Pocket Gamer tier list updated October 5, 2026, for version 6.1.0 places Aru in S tier and describes her as an early-available ranged character with strong stats. That is the publisher’s assessment, not an official developer ranking. If you enjoy attacking from range, she is a strong first character to build.
Rio: a straightforward character to learn
The same guide places Rio in S tier and describes him as intuitive and easy to learn. He is a reasonable core choice if you want a character whose handling feels accessible while you learn the combat system.

Lucas: keep him as your third option
The tier guide calls Lucas a solid third pick, although it rates his moveset below some alternatives. Since he is already part of your starting party, keep him available and invest further when his lance-user role suits your team or a particular fight.
How should you choose between characters?
A general ranking is only one input. Metria’s characters have distinct attacks and abilities, and elemental matchups can affect which choice is useful in a given battle. Compare characters on the following points:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Availability: Prioritize someone you can use now over a character you hope to obtain later. The beginner guide notes that characters acquired outside the story may be playable before their story appearance.
- Element: Check the enemy’s element and your character’s affinity. The guides describe elemental advantages and opposing damage relationships, so the matchup can matter more than a broad tier placement.
- Role and range: Think about whether the fight calls for ranged damage, melee pressure, durability, or utility such as debuffs. For example, the tier guide describes Shash as a ranged fighter whose debuffs can help a melee character after you switch.
- Handling: A character you can use comfortably may serve you better than a higher-ranked option that does not suit your playstyle. Rio is specifically described as easy to learn.
- Investment stage: Basic leveling and later enhancement systems are separate decisions. Check in-game eligibility and costs before committing scarce resources to advanced progression.
How do the other ranked characters fit in?
If you acquire additional characters, consider what they add to the team rather than replacing your starting lineup simply because they appear on a tier list.
| Character | What the guide says | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Shash | S tier; ranged, with debuffs that can help a melee character after switching. | Consider investing if you have Shash and want ranged utility to support a melee fighter. |
| Popodero | A tier; emphasizes damage and durability over speed. The guide says he appears later unless obtained through gacha. | A possible durable option if available, but not a reason to postpone building your starting party. |
The tier list says its placements reflect its own assessment of character usefulness and may change as characters are released. Its snapshot is labeled version 6.1.0 and was updated October 5, 2026; it added Green Hammer Knight Popodero and Purple Piercer Knight Zescole. See the current Metria tier list for that ranking snapshot.

How should you manage leveling and later upgrades?
Pocket Gamer’s beginner guide reports that most experience goes to the character used to defeat enemies, while some rewards reach the rest of the party. It describes dealing most of the damage with one character and switching to the character you want to level for the finishing blow as a workaround. Because this is guide-reported gameplay advice, check that the behavior still matches the current game before relying on it.
Later progression is a separate decision from choosing whom to level first. Asobimo’s official Limit Break notice announces further enhancement for eligible characters and describes eligibility and awakening changes. Check the current game and official notices for requirements and costs. An official 2024 character growth notice describes leveling and unlocking a character’s level cap through the Edit Character menu; the sales and dates in that notice are historical, not current offers.

What should a beginner do first?
- Choose a core character: Start with Aru if you like ranged play, or Rio if you prefer an intuitive character to learn with.
- Use the other starters as team options: Keep Lucas available and switch characters as combat roles or enemy matchups call for it.
- Invest in a small group: Focus effort on characters you regularly use rather than spreading it across the whole roster.
- Reassess when the fight or roster changes: Consider element, range, and utility when you acquire another character or face a matchup where your usual approach is less effective.
- Check advanced upgrade requirements in-game: Treat systems such as Limit Break as later progression choices, not automatic early-game priorities.
