If a PS5 game install says there isn’t enough space, open Settings > Storage to see what is using the console’s storage. The quickest fixes are usually deleting games or apps you no longer need, or using Customize to remove optional content in a supported game. If you want to keep games installed, USB extended storage can archive PS5 games, while a compatible M.2 SSD lets you play them from added storage.
Check what is using PS5 storage
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage.
- Review the storage categories and available space. The console separates games and apps, media, and saved data, which helps identify what can be removed without touching your saves.
There is no single free-space threshold that applies to every game install or update. Check the amount requested in the console’s prompt and the available space shown under Storage rather than relying on a general gigabyte estimate. PlayStation’s storage guide explains the console’s storage categories and management options.
Delete games or apps you can download again
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select one or more installed items you no longer need, then choose Delete.
- Return to the install and try again once enough space is available.
Deleting an installed game removes its local game data, not your access to a purchased title: PlayStation says deleted purchased games and apps can be downloaded again from your game library. You will need access to the account and a network connection to download them again. See PlayStation’s storage-management instructions.
Remove optional content in supported games
Some games let you remove selected add-ons or completed portions without deleting the rest of the game. In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the game and look for Customize. If the option appears, review the listed content and remove only what you no longer need. Customize is not available for every title or every kind of content. PlayStation describes the Customize option.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Choose a storage option if you want to keep more games
| Option | What it lets you do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Delete games or apps | Free console storage; purchased items can be downloaded again from your library. | Downloading again requires account and network access. PlayStation Support |
| Customize game content | Remove selected unused add-ons or completed portions in eligible games. | Only appears for supported games and content. PlayStation Support |
| USB extended storage | Archive PS5 games and play PS4 games directly from the drive. | PS5 games must be copied back to console or M.2 storage to play; formatting the drive erases its data. PlayStation Support |
| M.2 SSD storage | Install, play, and update PS5 games from added storage. | Requires a compatible M.2 NVMe drive and heat-dissipation parts; compatibility is not guaranteed for every third-party drive. PlayStation Support |
| PlayStation App | Manage internal console storage remotely when a download needs more room. | Frees internal space; it does not add storage capacity. PlayStation Support |
Use USB extended storage to archive PS5 games
A USB extended-storage drive is useful when you want to remove PS5 game data from the console but keep it for later. You cannot launch PS5 games directly from that drive; copy a game back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. Read PlayStation’s USB extended-storage guidance.
PlayStation specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. It warns that not every device is guaranteed to work, that the drive cannot connect through a USB hub, and that only one USB extended-storage drive can be connected at a time. Formatting as extended storage erases data on the drive, so back up anything important first. These are PlayStation’s published requirements, not a guarantee that any particular drive will work. Check the full USB requirements.

Add a compatible M.2 SSD for games you want to play
An M.2 SSD is the option for keeping PS5 games on added storage and playing them without copying them back to the console’s internal storage. PlayStation says games can be downloaded directly to M.2 storage and updated there. See PlayStation’s installation and compatibility guidance.
Compatibility depends on the exact console model and drive. For the CFI-71XX model group, Sony’s safety guide specifies an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 drive (Key M), a capacity of 250 GB to 8 TB, supported sizes of 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110, and compatible heat-dissipation parts. M.2 SATA is unsupported. Check the requirements for your own console model, including the drive’s complete physical dimensions with its heat-dissipation parts, before buying; Sony does not guarantee every third-party drive will work. Read the CFI-71XX safety guide.

Free space remotely with the PlayStation App
If a download is blocked because the console needs room and you are away from it, PlayStation says the PlayStation App can manage internal storage remotely so you can free space and finish the install. This is a way to manage existing console storage, not a way to add capacity. See PlayStation’s setup guidance.
Leave saved data alone unless you mean to manage saves
Saved data is separate from installed game data in the PS5 Storage menu. Do not delete saves as a routine fix for an install-space warning: remove games, apps, or eligible optional game content instead. PlayStation notes that PS5 saved data may use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, which requires a subscription. A regular USB drive used for screenshots or PS4 saves is also not the same thing as a drive formatted as USB extended storage. Review PlayStation’s storage guide.
