You usually cannot tell whether a game image was made with AI just by looking at it. Visual oddities can help you decide what to investigate, but they are not proof. The strongest assessment combines the exact asset’s context, any storefront disclosure or provenance data, and confirmation from the developer or artist.
Start by identifying the exact image
Before judging an image, establish what it is and where it came from. A character portrait in a game, a loading screen, a store capsule, a promotional video still, and a user-created item may have different creators and production histories—even when they depict the same game.
- Record the asset’s location and source: in-game build, official store page, publisher marketing channel, or user-generated content.
- Note when it appeared and who published it. Check for an official credit, production note, correction, or statement about the asset.
- Keep the original file if available. A screenshot or re-export may have lost useful provenance information.
Being precise about the image matters: a claim about one promotional image does not establish how the game’s other artwork was made.
Use visual clues as questions, not a verdict
Look for specific inconsistencies rather than deciding that an image “looks like AI.” For example, ask whether small repeated details stay consistent, whether object boundaries and perspective make sense, whether lettering remains legible, and whether anatomy, lighting, reflections, or recurring motifs contradict each other.

These are inspection prompts, not validated diagnostic tests. Conventional rendering can produce artifacts; artists may deliberately distort forms or perspective; and editing, scaling, compression, or post-processing can hide or introduce irregularities. Unfamiliar style, polish, symmetry, or unusual anatomy alone does not establish AI authorship.
When possible, compare related assets from the same game or artist, while accounting for differences in art direction, image size, compression, UI overlays, and post-processing. The available evidence does not establish a validated checklist of visual defects or accuracy rates specific to game art.

Weigh the evidence sources

A detector score is another limited signal, not a substitute for this combination. It does not, by itself, establish authorship, ownership, responsibility, or how much AI contributed.
Check what the storefront says
Steam
Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks about AI used to create content that ships with a game and is consumed by players, including artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. It distinguishes pre-generated content made during development from live-generated content created while the game runs. For live-generated content, the survey requires a description of safeguards against illegal content.

A Steam disclosure is useful evidence of what the publisher reported, not independent verification. An absent entry is likewise not proof that no AI was used.
Google Play
Google Play Console guidance separately documents asset-specific self-declaration for certain AI-generated or AI-edited visual assets, including store listing and promotional images or videos. That guidance concerns submissions through Play Console; it should not be generalized into a rule covering every image inside every game.

Check provenance if you have the original file
If you can obtain the original image, preserve it and check for Content Credentials or other embedded provenance before cropping, converting, or re-exporting it. OpenAI describes Content Credentials as information about a file’s origin and history, but notes that ordinary actions such as taking a screenshot or converting a file can remove credentials. Watermarks may survive some changes, yet become undetectable after more extensive cropping, compression, or editing. See OpenAI’s explanation of provenance in ChatGPT images.
OpenAI’s verification tools look for supported signals associated with OpenAI tools; they are not designed to detect every AI model. A positive supported signal is evidence of likely generation or processing by a supported tool, but does not identify the human creator or settle ownership, legal responsibility, or the extent of model involvement. A negative result means only that the tool found no supported signal. AI may still have been used, including through another system or after signals were stripped or degraded.

What human detection research can—and cannot—tell you
A 2025 study by Thomas Roca, Anthony Cintron Roman, Jehú Torres Vega, Marcelo Duarte, Pengce Wang, Kevin White, Amit Misra, and Juan Lavista Ferres analyzed about 287,000 image judgments by more than 12,500 participants in an online identification game. The study authors reported 62% overall success. Participants did better with human portraits and struggled more with natural and urban landscapes. The result illustrates the limits of unaided judgment in that study; it is not an accuracy benchmark for game textures, illustrations, or any particular image generator. Seek corroboration before making a claim
Look for official credits, developer statements, production notes, an artist’s process evidence, or a publisher response. Wizards of the Coast’s generative AI art FAQ, updated 18 June 2025, describes human review alongside evolving detection resources and acknowledges that detection can be difficult, particularly as generative AI becomes part of tools such as Photoshop. That example supports layered review, not treating a classifier as conclusive.
If you raise a concern publicly or report it, separate observation from conclusion. Name the specific asset and its source, describe the feature you noticed, and say whether you found a platform disclosure or provenance signal. Label an unconfirmed inference as a suspicion; do not accuse a named artist based only on visual resemblance or an automated score.
EU transparency timing
For readers following European Union rules, the European Commission says relevant transparency obligations under Article 50(2) and (4) of the AI Act apply from 2 August 2026. It also describes a transition until 2 December 2026 for in-scope AI systems placed on the market before 2 August 2026. The Commission’s Code of Practice is voluntary, supports implementation, and does not replace the Act. These dates describe the stated EU framework; they are not a universal disclosure deadline for every game image or a method for determining how a particular asset was made.
