You can create game concept art without an AI image generator by painting or sketching directly, photobashing licensed or in-house material, or using simple 3D block-ins and kitbashing as a base for painted concepts. These approaches solve different problems: choose according to the control you need, the skills and source material available, and whether you need a visual design reference or a finished game asset.
Which non-AI workflow fits your concept-art task?
| Approach | Control over final design | Skills and setup | Iteration and source material | Typical output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Digital painting and sketching | High: the artist creates and revises the image directly. | Requires drawing and painting skills; a graphics tablet is optional. | Flexible iteration, but each revision is made by the artist. | An artist-authored concept image. |
| Photobashing | Depends on the source material and the amount of compositing, repainting, and grading. | Requires image-editing skills and suitable photos or renders. | Useful when appropriate source material is available; its rights and visual consistency need attention. | A composite concept image, not automatically a production-ready asset. |
| 3D block-ins or kitbashing | Useful for spatial decisions; the final design depends on how the block-in is refined. | Requires access to usable 3D forms and the ability to assemble or work from them. | Can help explore perspective, composition, scale, or lighting; no particular speed advantage is established. | A painted-over concept or visual reference, not necessarily a finished game asset. |
| Licensed stock or asset packs | Limited by the material’s available forms and the terms governing its use. | Requires finding suitable material and understanding its license. | Can provide references or reusable components if the license permits the intended use. | Reference or components; production use depends on rights and adaptation. |
These options are not interchangeable. A concept image communicates a visual direction; a production-ready game asset must also meet the project’s technical and implementation needs. Adobe describes image generators as a way to explore environments, characters, palettes, and textures before prototypes, but that is vendor guidance, not proof that any one manual workflow is a universal replacement. Paint and sketch the image directly
Direct digital painting is the clearest artist-authored route: the artist makes the marks, shapes, and revisions in the painting program. It suits work where you want close control over the design, from rough sketches to more resolved concept images.
Krita as a documented option
Krita describes itself as a free, open-source digital painting program and lists layers, drawing assistants, and stabilizers among its tools. Its FAQ says artists and studios can use it commercially, including for commercial games. Because that FAQ dates to 2012, check its current wording and the current software details before relying on it for a project.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A graphics tablet and stylus are optional input devices, not a requirement and not a software substitute. Krita’s 2012 FAQ documents compatibility with Wacom, Huion, and other UC-Logic-based tablets when configured properly; it should not be treated as a complete list of currently supported devices.
Build concepts with photobashing
Photobashing combines photos or 3D renders, then composites, repaints, and grades them to form a coherent concept. It can be useful for environmental surfaces and grounded visual references, especially when suitable source images already exist. The method still depends on the artist’s choices and refinement; a collection of source images is not, by itself, a finished concept.

A photobashing workflow guide from Hailuo describes using licensed or in-house source material. Treat the guide as a description of the workflow, not as independent support for its vendor’s AI-product claims.
Check source rights before using images
Buying or downloading an image does not automatically establish every right needed for a game. Before incorporating stock images or asset-pack material, check whether the license covers the intended commercial game, modifications, and any redistribution involved in the final product. The cited workflow guide does not define licensing terms, so the license for each source remains the authority.

Use 3D block-ins or kitbashing for spatial ideas
A simple 3D block-in or an assembly of existing forms can help settle perspective, composition, scale, or lighting. You can paint over the result or use it as a visual reference while designing the final image. This is especially distinct from direct painting: the 3D arrangement helps establish spatial relationships, while the artist still decides how the concept should look.
Do not mistake a block-in or kitbashed reference for a completed game asset. The available academic material discusses game-asset creation as a range of methods for different asset types, and a thesis considers game-art workflows, but neither establishes a specific software pipeline or quantified time savings. See the research review and the Game Art Asset Creation thesis.

Choose a workflow by the output you need
- Choose direct painting when the priority is an artist-authored image and you have the drawing or painting skills to develop it directly.
- Choose photobashing when suitable photos or renders are available and you can verify their rights and integrate them into a consistent design.
- Choose a 3D block-in when perspective, scale, composition, or lighting is the main challenge, and plan to refine the result into a concept or reference.
- Use stock or asset packs selectively when their material fits the concept and their licenses permit the exact intended use.
These methods can also be combined: for example, a 3D block-in can establish the camera and large forms before an artist paints over it, or licensed source images can be composited and then substantially repainted. The right choice depends on the task rather than on a single best replacement for image generation.
