The IMAX label alone does not guarantee expanded framing or identical picture and sound at every theater. Check the specific film, venue, showtime, and ticket price before paying more.
What you may get for the IMAX upcharge
The clearest film-specific benefit can be an expanded image. IMAX says some filmmakers use IMAX film cameras or IMAX-certified digital cameras to present scenes in expanded aspect ratios of 1.90:1 or 1.43:1. The expanded framing may appear only in selected scenes, or across a film; it is not automatic for every IMAX screening. See IMAX’s Filmed For IMAX overview and its 2025 Form 10-K.
In its 2021 Form 10-K, IMAX described up to 26% more image on a standard IMAX movie screen for certain films shot with IMAX cameras, and up to 67% more in select 1.43:1 IMAX theaters. Those are company-published maximums for particular films and venues—not typical results or a guarantee for an unspecified movie or auditorium. The figures appear in IMAX’s 2021 filing.
Whether that difference matters depends on the movie. A film that uses expanded framing throughout may make the format more compelling to someone who values seeing more of the intended image. If the expansion is limited to a few scenes—or the local venue does not offer the relevant presentation—the main reason to pay extra may not apply as strongly.

How to check whether a specific IMAX showing is worth it
- Look up the film’s format details. Check the film’s official IMAX information for whether expanded framing is used throughout or only in selected scenes. A title being advertised as IMAX does not, by itself, establish how much of the film uses an expanded aspect ratio.
- Confirm the local auditorium’s presentation. Check the exact venue and showtime with the exhibitor. The 1.43:1 presentation is available only at select venues, and listings can change. For example, IMAX’s September 26, 2025 announcement for One Battle After Another identified specific 70mm film and IMAX with Laser venues offering 1.43:1 for the full film and advised moviegoers to confirm listings with local exhibitors. That historical announcement is not evidence of current showtimes.
- Compare actual ticket totals. Check the IMAX price against standard and other premium-format tickets for the same movie at comparable times. There is no universal IMAX premium: AMC has said premium-format upcharges vary by format and theater. Its statement was made in a 2023 ticketing announcement; use your current local listings rather than treating any one price as a national rate.
- Decide whether the difference fits your priorities and budget. If the movie uses the format in a way you value, the auditorium provides that presentation, and the incremental cost feels reasonable, IMAX is easier to justify. Otherwise, standard screening or another premium option may be better value for you.
IMAX versus Dolby Cinema
If both formats are available locally, compare the features rather than assuming one is universally better. IMAX emphasizes its screen and presentation, including the possibility of expanded framing for certain films. AMC describes Dolby Cinema at AMC as combining Dolby Vision laser projection, Dolby Atmos audio, power reclining seats, and seat transducers. Those features come from AMC’s own 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 23, 2026; they do not establish which format you will prefer. Compare the actual auditorium, movie presentation, seating, and price for your showtime.

Not as a blanket recommendation. IMAX, Disney, and DTS announced selected Marvel titles for IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ in 2021, including an expanded 1.90:1 presentation. That announcement establishes a historical offering, not the current catalog or availability in every market. Check whether the particular title and format are currently available where you live before treating home viewing as an alternative. The original announcement is at IMAX’s Disney+ IMAX Enhanced release page.
