If Gemini voice commands don’t work, first identify which voice route is failing: tapping the microphone inside the Gemini app, or saying “Hey Google” to start Gemini hands-free. They use different activation settings. And if Gemini hears you but does not complete the request, the issue may be feature support or permissions—not voice recognition.
First, identify how you’re trying to start Gemini
Gemini’s in-app microphone and hands-free activation are separate routes. Google’s Android getting-started guide says to open the Gemini app, tap the microphone, say your prompt, and send it. Google also notes that “Hey Google” is not available in every language, but you can still chat with Gemini by tapping Microphone.

If tapping the microphone works but “Hey Google” does not open Gemini, focus on hands-free activation and Voice Match. If the in-app microphone is missing or does not work, the available Google guidance does not establish one universal device-level fix. Note your device model, Android version, account type, and the exact error before trying device-specific troubleshooting.

Turn on Hey Google and set up Voice Match
Google’s Gemini setup guidance directs users to enable Hey Google and set up Voice Match through the Gemini app. Follow the settings flow shown in your version of the app; labels and paths can change. Complete the Voice Match prompts, and retrain it if the app asks you to.

Voice Match is a hands-free activation requirement, not a setting for the in-app microphone. If Gemini works when you tap Microphone, that is useful evidence that in-app voice chat is available even if wake-word activation is not.
Try another supported way to open your assistant
If Google is set as your phone’s default assistant app, touch activation may be available instead of the wake word. Depending on the device, Google documents options such as holding the power button, holding Home, or swiping up from a bottom corner. These gestures are not available on every Android phone. You can also open Gemini and tap its microphone to speak.

Check whether your language, account, or device supports the feature
Wake-word activation and some Gemini features are not available in every language or country. Eligibility can also depend on account type and device. Google says some Gemini features are unavailable for supervised accounts and work or school accounts. Its Gemini mobile app capabilities page states: “Hey Google” and some features previously available in Google Assistant are not available in all languages and countries, or for supervised accounts.
These limitations can explain why voice interaction is unavailable or why a particular command does not behave as expected; they do not necessarily indicate a broken microphone. Check Google’s current availability and account guidance for the feature you want, especially if you use a supervised, work, or school account.

Gemini hears me but doesn’t do what I asked
Starting voice interaction and completing a request are different steps. Gemini may receive your prompt, then be unable to perform it because the requested feature is not supported, the account is not eligible, or required settings or permissions are missing.
Some Google Assistant actions are not available in Gemini
Gemini does not yet support every feature that was available in Google Assistant. If a familiar quick voice action is unsupported, Google’s guidance is to switch back to Google Assistant. That is a feature-availability issue, not necessarily a problem with your microphone or Voice Match.

For phone controls, check Device assistance and the required settings
Gemini uses its Device assistance connected app for supported Android device-management tasks. Google notes that some actions require additional settings and permissions for the Google app. See Google’s instructions for controlling an Android device with Device assistance for the specific action you want to use.
If Gemini recognizes your words but does not carry out a phone-control request, check whether that action is supported and whether Google’s instructions require an additional setting or permission. The requirements depend on the action, so do not assume one general permission change will fix every command.

Keep smart-speaker checks separate from phone troubleshooting
Google’s “Fix issues with ‘Hey Google’” guide includes different checks for speakers, smart displays, and smart clocks: confirm that the device has power and a network connection, that it is on the same Wi-Fi network as the mobile device, and that its physical microphone switch or mute control is not off. Those checks apply to those devices; they do not establish a fix for an Android phone’s Gemini app.
Don’t confuse Gemini with Android Voice Access
Android Voice Access is a separate accessibility feature for controlling a device with spoken commands; it is not Gemini voice chat or the “Hey Google” wake word. If you mean system-wide spoken control rather than asking Gemini questions, use Google’s Voice Access setup and command guidance.
