Choose the Dyson V12 Detect Slim if lighter handling and dust-visibility features matter most; choose the V15 Detect if you want Dyson’s strongest suction comparison and the largest listed bin; choose the V8 if you prefer a simpler two-mode model and do not need the V12 or V15’s dust feedback. The right fit also depends on your floor types, home size, pets, and how often you want to empty the bin.

Dyson V8 vs. V12 vs. V15 at a glance

The figures below are Dyson’s comparison-table specifications. “Up to” runtime is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise of typical use time.

Model Listed weight Maximum advertised runtime Bin capacity Dyson suction comparison to V8 Controls and modes Dust feedback
V8 5.6 lb Up to 40 minutes 0.14 gallon Baseline Trigger; 2 modes No illumination head listed in Dyson’s comparison
V12 Detect Slim 5.2 lb Up to 60 minutes 0.1 gallon 30% more Button; 3 modes Illumination, piezo dust sensing, and LCD particle display
V15 Detect 6.8 lb Up to 60 minutes 0.2 gallon 100% more Trigger; 3 modes Illumination, piezo dust sensing, and LCD display

Dyson’s suction percentages are manufacturer comparisons against the V8, not independent head-to-head test results. Dyson says runtime varies with power mode, dust level, floor type, and attachments. The exact included heads and accessories can also vary by retail bundle, so check the configuration you are considering. Dyson’s comparison page and its V12 and V15 model pages provide the specifications.

Which model suits your priorities?

Choose the V12 Detect Slim for lighter handling

In Dyson’s comparison table, the V12 is the lightest of these three at 5.2 lb. It also adds a button control, three modes, illumination, dust sensing, and an LCD particle display. Its trade-off is the smallest listed bin: 0.1 gallon.

Dyson V15 Detect™ Origin Cordless Vacuum
  • Powerful and intelligent for whole-home deep cleaning. Reveals invisible dust.
  • 100% more power.¹ 60 minutes of run time.²
  • Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
  • Intelligently adapts power based on debris detected and floor type. LCD screen shows total picked-up particles on-screen as you clean.³ Also displays power mode, maintenance alerts, and remaining run time to the second.
  • 2 Advanced cleaner heads. The Fluffy Optic cleaner head reveals invisible dust. Gentle on hard floors but tough on dirt. The Digital Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types and de-tangles long hair and pet hair as you clean.

There is a weight discrepancy within Dyson’s material: the V12 product page describes the vacuum as 4.8 lb, while the comparison table lists 5.2 lb. These figures may reflect different configurations or descriptions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. If weight is decisive, check the specification for the exact package you plan to buy. Dyson’s V12 page

Choose the V15 Detect for the largest listed bin and Dyson’s highest suction comparison

Dyson lists the V15 at 0.2 gallon, twice the V12’s listed bin capacity. Its stated suction comparison is 100% more than the V8, and its listed weight is 6.8 lb, making it the heaviest of the three in the comparison. The V15 adds illumination and particle sensing, along with a Digital Motorbar head that Dyson describes as adapting power by floor type in Auto mode. The V15 Detect Absolute specification page gives a slightly more precise weight of 6.83 lb for that configuration and lists 230 air watts in Boost mode; those figures refer specifically to the Absolute configuration, not necessarily every V15 bundle. Choose the V8 for a simpler feature set

The V8 has two modes and trigger control, with up to 40 minutes of advertised runtime. Dyson’s comparison does not list an illumination head for it. Consider it if you do not need the V12 and V15’s dust-feedback features and prefer the simpler setup; the available specifications do not establish that it will meet every household’s cleaning needs.

Match the vacuum to your floors and household

Floor mix and the heads included with a particular bundle matter as much as the model name. Dyson describes the V12’s Motorbar for carpets and hard floors, and its Fluffy Optic head for hard floors. For the V15, Dyson describes the Digital Motorbar as adapting power by floor type in Auto mode. Confirm which heads are included in the retailer’s exact listing rather than assuming every package contains the same accessories.

Dyson Cyclone V10 Origin Cordless Vacuum
  • Powerful Dyson suction and run time to deep clean your home. Without the cord.
  • Up to 60 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
  • Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
  • Choose between three cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.
  • Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types. De-tangles wrapped long hair and pet hair as you clean.
  • Mostly hard floors: Check whether the bundle includes the hard-floor head you want. The V12’s Fluffy Optic is described for hard floors; Dyson also describes dust illumination on the V12 and V15.
  • A mix of carpet and hard floors: Compare the included Motorbar or Digital Motorbar head and the controls you prefer. Dyson says the V15’s Digital Motorbar adjusts power by floor type in Auto mode.
  • Pets or long hair: Include hair cleanup and bin capacity in your decision. The V15 has the largest listed bin; the cited specifications alone do not establish comparative pet-hair performance.
  • Large home or longer cleaning sessions: Do not equate advertised maximum runtime with guaranteed whole-home coverage. Dyson’s runtime caveat makes mode, floor, dust, and attachments relevant, and the V8 has the shortest listed maximum.
  • Small home or frequent quick cleanups: A smaller bin may be less consequential if you are comfortable emptying it more often; the V12 pairs the smallest listed bin with the lightest comparison-table weight.

What the dust illumination and particle display do—and do not establish

The V12 and V15 add illumination and particle feedback that the V8 comparison does not list. Dyson’s V15 launch announcement says its engineers positioned a green laser diode “at a 1.5 degree angle, 7.3mm off the ground” to make dust visible on hard floors. That is Dyson’s description of the design, not independent evidence that one model cleans better in every home. Dyson’s V15 launch announcement

How to make the final choice

  1. Decide what matters most: handling weight points toward the V12; the largest listed bin and Dyson’s strongest stated suction comparison point toward the V15; a simpler two-mode model points toward the V8.
  2. Check your floor types: identify whether you need a head for hard floors, carpet, or both, then verify the exact bundle’s contents.
  3. Estimate your cleaning pattern: treat runtime as “up to” and account for power mode, floor type, dust, and attachments rather than planning around the maximum alone.
  4. Consider the controls and feedback: the V12 uses a button, while the V8 and V15 use triggers; the V12 and V15 add illumination and particle sensing.
  5. Verify the exact configuration: specifications, heads, and accessories can differ between bundles. Check the current product listing before purchase; prices and stock are not established here.
