There is no universal graphics preset that makes every open-world simulation game run smoothly on every PC. The right settings depend on the game, your hardware, the scene, and your display resolution. Start with the game’s recommended preset, then change one setting at a time and compare the same demanding route or location.

What to record before changing settings

Write down the game and version, CPU, GPU, RAM, display resolution and refresh rate, and the performance you are seeing. Also identify the problem: low average frame rate, stutter, uneven motion, or input and display latency. Those symptoms can have different causes, so the distinction helps you judge whether a change worked.

Choose a smoothness target that makes sense for your display and the game. No single frame-rate target or graphics profile can be prescribed without those details.

Build a repeatable comparison

  1. Start from a baseline. Use the game’s recommended preset, or a moderate preset if it has none. Record the settings and observe performance before making changes.
  2. Test a representative scene. Use the same save, location, route, and conditions where possible. Include the situations that challenge your game, such as travel, crowds, foliage, or weather when those occur. An empty area may conceal the problem.
  3. Change one option at a time. Keep a brief before-and-after note, and avoid changing in-game settings and driver controls together. This makes it easier to tell which change helped.
  4. Judge more than the average. Compare consistency in demanding scenes, clarity at your display’s native resolution, the visual value of the effect you changed, and any blur or artifacts from scaling.

Check that the game is using the intended GPU

If your Windows PC has more than one GPU, confirm that the game is assigned to the one you intend to use before reducing visual quality. Windows provides a per-app GPU preference in its graphics settings; the available choices depend on the system. Microsoft documents the setting and compatible windowed-game optimizations in its DirectX graphics and gaming updates. These optimizations can reduce presentation latency in compatible situations, but they are not a general guarantee of higher rendering performance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Lower settings in a controlled order

Setting names do not reveal their cost reliably. A setting that is expensive in one game or location may have little effect in another. Test only the options your game actually provides, and keep the visual details you care about most.

Try resolution or upscaling if the GPU is the limit

A lower output or render resolution can improve frame rate at the expense of image quality. If the game offers an upscaling mode, compare it with native rendering and inspect fine detail, motion, and temporal artifacts. Microsoft describes this general tradeoff and notes that Automatic Super Resolution is restricted to eligible hardware, games, and graphics formats; it is not a universal Windows option. See Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution guidance.

Test demanding effects one by one

If available, test ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, view distance, and foliage in small steps. Do not assume that disabling any one of them will produce the largest gain: the performance cost and visual impact depend on the game, hardware, resolution, and scene.

NVIDIA’s guide to Control illustrates why title-specific testing matters: it compares individual settings for that game and cautions that the effect of distance scaling changes with location, settings, and gameplay scenario. Its measurements are not a performance ranking for other games. Read NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide.

Match display synchronization to the problem

If your frame rate fluctuates and your display supports variable refresh rate (VRR), check whether compatible VRR is enabled in the display, graphics software, and game setup. Microsoft identifies AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and VESA Adaptive-Sync as examples of VRR technologies. A compatible display adjusts its refresh rate to the frame rate; it can improve how changing frame rates appear, but it does not make the game render more frames. See Microsoft’s explanation of variable refresh rate.

Check your current monitor before considering a purchase: VRR support and compatibility depend on the display and system configuration. A VRR monitor is optional and is not a fix for a game that is rendering too slowly.

Try a frame cap for uneven motion

If the average frame rate seems adequate but motion feels inconsistent, test a stable in-game frame cap that your system can sustain and that suits your display. Compare the same scene with and without the cap. An exact cap cannot be recommended without knowing your refresh rate and observed performance.

AMD documents frame-rate targeting in Radeon software and notes that, for DirectX and Vulkan applications, VSync control may be in the game rather than the driver. Check the controls available for your game and graphics setup in AMD’s Radeon graphics FAQ.

When graphics changes do not help

Lowering graphics quality may not fix a CPU-limited problem. Microsoft’s Windows game-development guidance distinguishes CPU-limited and GPU-limited situations, but it is developer guidance—not a consumer diagnostic test or a guarantee that a particular setting will resolve a slowdown. If changes to GPU-heavy options make little difference, avoid assuming that every graphics option needs to be lowered; investigate performance in the specific game and scene instead. See Microsoft’s Windows title guidance on latency and performance.

Choose the best result for your game

Keep the highest settings that meet your chosen smoothness target in demanding scenes, not merely in an easy-to-render area. For each change, weigh frame-rate consistency against image clarity, visual quality, scaling artifacts, hardware and game compatibility, and display behavior. The result is a tested profile for your PC and play style—not a universal preset.
