For a game bought on the Steam Store, the standard refund window is within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Both conditions apply, and submitting a request does not guarantee approval. Steam reviews requests, including those outside the standard window.
Check the rule that applies before you buy
Steam’s refund terms depend on what you are buying and, in some cases, whether content has been used or transferred. The table summarizes the main distinctions in Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, last updated April 23, 2024.

| Gift | An unredeemed gift follows the standard 14-day and under-two-hour window. For a redeemed gift, the recipient must initiate the request under the same conditions; the refund goes to the original purchaser. |
These are not interchangeable versions of one rule. Before checkout, identify the purchase type and check its specific conditions—especially playtime, release date, and whether an item can be used or transferred.
How to request a Steam refund
- Go to Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Open the relevant purchase and follow the support prompts to submit a refund request. Explain the reason accurately; Steam says requests can be made for any reason, but the applicable conditions still matter.
- Wait for Steam to review the request. If approved, the full refund is issued within a week to the Steam Wallet or the original payment method. If that payment method cannot accept the refund, Steam credits the Wallet.
A request is not the same as an approved refund. Steam says customers may still submit requests outside its stated terms, but Valve reviews them and does not promise approval.

Know what Steam does not refund through the game policy
- Purchases made outside Steam: Valve cannot refund third-party CD keys or Steam Wallet cards. Contact the seller or issuer about its own terms.
- Video content: Steam says video is not refundable unless it is bundled with other refundable content.
- Games with a VAC ban: A VAC ban removes the right to refund that game.
- Hardware and accessories: These follow a separate hardware policy, not the game-refund process.
Steam’s policy also notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights for faulty games. The policy page does not explain those rights, so local rules should not be assumed from the general Steam refund terms.
Use the policy as purchase-risk protection, not a free trial
Steam describes refunds as a way to remove purchase risk, not to obtain free games. It says it may stop offering refunds if it considers a customer to be abusing the system. It also explicitly says that requesting a refund to rebuy a game at a sale price is not abuse.

As a practical precaution, keep track of the purchase date and recorded playtime if you may want to request a refund. For DLC, bundles, and in-game items, also check whether use, modification, or transfer changes eligibility.
