For most affordable Android phones, 6GB of physical RAM and 128GB of internal storage is a sensible everyday-use target. A well-optimized 4GB/128GB phone can still work for calls, messaging, browsing and casual video, but 8GB RAM gives more room for frequent app switching, while 256GB storage suits people who record lots of video or keep large offline libraries.
These are practical buying guidelines, not universal minimum requirements. Your apps and media habits matter, and the processor, software optimization and update policy also affect how well a phone serves you over time.
What RAM and storage actually do
RAM affects app switching
Physical RAM is working memory used by the operating system and apps. More RAM can let a phone keep more apps available when you switch between them. It does not, on its own, make a slow processor faster.
For calls, messaging, web browsing and occasional video, 4GB can be workable if the software is well optimized. It is a budget compromise, though, rather than the comfortable choice for everyone. Current affordable-phone examples include 4GB models described as suitable for everyday or casual tasks, with limitations for consistently smooth use.

Features called “RAM expansion” or “virtual RAM” use storage as a supplement. They are not equivalent to physical RAM, so do not count advertised expansion as if it were installed memory.
Storage holds your apps and files
Internal storage holds the operating system, apps, photos, videos, downloads and offline media. A 128GB phone is a reasonable fit if you take photos and usually stream music and video. Consider 256GB if you frequently record video, install large games, save media for offline use or would rather not manage files and remove downloads.
How much RAM and storage to choose
| Configuration | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 4GB RAM / 128GB storage | Casual use: calls, messaging, browsing and occasional video | Less room for keeping multiple apps available; performance depends heavily on the phone’s processor and software optimization. |
| 6GB RAM / 128GB storage | A practical target for typical everyday use and more frequent app switching | May be limiting if you keep many large games or lots of video and offline media on the phone. |
| 8GB RAM / 128GB storage | Frequent multitasking or a preference for more RAM headroom | Extra RAM does not automatically improve every task, and it does not add file space. |
| 6GB RAM / 256GB storage | People who record video, keep large offline libraries or do not want to offload files often | Extra storage does not improve app switching the way additional physical RAM can. |

Which upgrade is worth paying for?
Compare the price difference with the limitation you are most likely to notice:
- Choosing between 4GB/128GB and 6GB/128GB? If you switch between apps often or want more headroom, the extra physical RAM is usually the more useful upgrade.
- Choosing between 6GB/128GB and 6GB/256GB? Choose the larger storage option if you keep video, games or offline media on your phone, or do not want to regularly remove files.
- Mostly storing media? If the exact model supports microSD, a compatible card may be a less expensive way to carry more photos, music or downloaded video. It adds storage, not RAM. Check the phone’s specifications and confirm what types of data can be stored on the card.
Affordable-phone configurations in context
Configurations listed in Android Central’s affordable-phone roundup show the range available, rather than a globally available shortlist. Examples include:
- Moto G (2025): 4GB RAM and 128GB storage, with a microSD slot listed for cards up to 1TB. The roundup says it should handle everyday use such as browsing and light gaming.
- Moto G (2026): 4GB RAM and 128GB storage in the reviewed configuration.
- Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: 4GB RAM and 128GB storage; the roundup describes the RAM as less than ideal for completely smooth use but adequate for casual tasks.
- Moto G Power 5G (2024): 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, with a microSD slot listed for cards up to 1TB.
- CMF Phone 1: configurations listed with 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage.
These are examples, not guarantees of current availability. RAM and storage can differ by country, carrier and regional SKU, even when the model name is the same. Check the exact listing before buying.

Will more memory make the phone last longer?
More RAM or storage can make a particular workload more comfortable, but neither guarantees future software support or compatibility. In its 2023 impact assessment, the European Commission noted that more memory and storage alone do not guarantee compatibility with future operating-system versions because the system-on-chip and other hardware must also be compatible. The assessment said 4GB RAM and 64GB flash could be considered reasonable for current models in its policy context; that figure is not a universal consumer recommendation.
Check the chipset and the manufacturer’s software update policy separately from the memory configuration. A phone with more RAM is not automatically a better long-term choice if its processor or update support is weaker.

Two requirements that should not change an ordinary budget-phone purchase
Android Go figures are platform minimums
Google’s Android (Go edition) documentation describes Go as optimized for entry-level, low-RAM devices. Its published table lists 2GB for Android 13 Go. That is a platform minimum, not a recommendation for a responsive mainstream phone; the table does not establish thresholds for later Go releases.

Advanced Gemini features have a separate hardware bar
Google’s Android phones and devices overview lists 12GB or more of RAM among several requirements for a specified set of advanced Gemini Intelligence features. The list also includes a qualified flagship processor and other requirements. This applies to those features, not to ordinary Android use or a general affordable-phone baseline; availability and specifications vary by device and region.
Separately, Google’s August 2026 developer blog describes Play memory-use thresholds for apps and games, with enforcement scheduled to begin in February 2027. These are app-publishing requirements for developers, not a consumer phone RAM minimum.
