An atmospheric river is a long, narrow corridor of concentrated water vapor moving through the atmosphere. It can bring rain or snow when it reaches land, and its effects range from useful replenishment of water supplies and snowpack to flooding and other damage. The term describes how moisture moves; it does not, on its own, signal an imminent disaster.
What is an atmospheric river?
Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions of the atmosphere that transport water vapor, particularly outside the tropics. They are not literal rivers of liquid water in the sky. NOAA describes them as moisture corridors that move through the atmosphere and can carry large amounts of water vapor toward land. NOAA’s explanation of atmospheric rivers compares an average system’s vapor-transport rate to the average water flow at the mouth of the Mississippi River; exceptionally strong systems can transport up to 15 times that amount. This is an equivalent-flow analogy, not a claim that a sky feature contains a river’s volume of liquid water.
How wide and long are they?
NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service describes atmospheric rivers as roughly 250 to 375 miles wide and sometimes more than 1,000 miles long. These are descriptive estimates, not fixed dimensions: individual systems vary in shape and size. NOAA NESDIS explains their scale and formation.
How do atmospheric rivers produce rain or snow?
Moist air in an atmospheric river moves inland and can be forced upward, including as it encounters mountains. Rising air cools, and water vapor condenses into precipitation. Depending on temperature and elevation, that precipitation may fall as rain or snow. NOAA NESDIS describes how atmospheric rivers bring precipitation.

Are atmospheric rivers dangerous?
Not necessarily. Their impacts depend on how much moisture they transport, how long they persist over a place, the type of precipitation, and local conditions such as watershed vulnerability. Weaker events can help replenish water supplies and mountain snowpack. Strong or persistent events can produce extreme precipitation, flooding, mudslides, travel disruption, and damage, particularly where watersheds are already vulnerable. The atmospheric-river label alone is not a damage forecast.
What does the Atmospheric River Scale mean?
The five-category scale communicates both the possible benefits and hazards of an event. It uses integrated vapor transport (IVT), a measure of water-vapor transport, and duration at a location; duration can adjust a category. The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes’ scale names the categories as follows:

A category is not a guaranteed outcome or a simple damage rating. A prolonged event or one affecting a vulnerable watershed can have greater consequences than the category alone suggests.
What is the Pineapple Express?
The Pineapple Express is a well-known example of an atmospheric river: a strong system that carries moisture from the tropical Pacific near Hawaii toward the West Coast of North America. How important are atmospheric rivers to West Coast precipitation?
NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory says that about 30–50% of annual precipitation in the West Coast states occurs in just a few atmospheric-river events. This regional estimate does not mean that the same share applies to every location or every year. NOAA’s Atmospheric Rivers portal provides background on their role in the region’s water cycle.
How are atmospheric rivers observed and forecast?
NOAA describes using satellite, radar, aircraft, and specialized observatory observations to improve understanding and forecasts. NOAA’s Atmospheric River Observation Network sends more than 21 million unique meteorological observations to the National Weather Service each year; that figure counts observations, not atmospheric-river events. For potential heavy rain and flooding in vulnerable areas, NOAA says warnings can be issued as many as five to seven days ahead. That is a possible lead time, not a guarantee for every event or location. For an active system, use current official forecasts and follow local emergency instructions. Look beyond the label or category. Relevant differences include the amount of moisture transported, how long the system remains over a location, whether precipitation falls as rain or snow, and the exposure and condition of local watersheds. Forecast confidence and lead time also matter when assessing what residents may need to do.
