Choose healthy trees and suitable sites, reduce cold and wet stress and wounding, and remove infected wood in dry weather. Copper is not a dependable universal fix: current recommendations differ by region, and no source here establishes a universally safe canker treatment for bees. This guidance focuses chiefly on sweet cherry in Oregon, Washington, and California; growers of tart cherry or orchards elsewhere should consult local extension advice.
How do I prevent bacterial canker in cherry trees?
Bacterial canker is associated with pathogens in the Pseudomonas syringae complex. Disease risk rises when the bacteria are present and susceptible tissue encounters favorable conditions and entry points. The bacteria can persist on plant surfaces, weeds, nearby trees, or nursery stock; cool, wet weather, frost injury, and wounds can help turn their presence into damaging infection. Washington State University outlines these interacting factors in its bacterial canker guidance.
In spring, signs can include limb dieback, rough cankers, amber gum, and sometimes damage to young flowers and shoots. A sour-sap phase may instead cause brown, fermented-smelling inner bark without obvious gum or cankers. Rain splash spreads bacteria, while moisture and cool spring temperatures favor disease, according to UC IPM’s California cherry guidance (last text-updated September 2015).
Lower risk before planting
- Use healthy, inspected nursery trees; reject visibly cankered or gumming stock.
- Assess frost pockets and slow-drying sites before planting or renewing a block. Consider cultivar and rootstock susceptibility, soil condition, nutrition, and nematode history with local extension guidance.
- Where feasible, avoid planting susceptible cultivars in frost-prone areas. Affected new orchards can suffer substantial losses: Oregon State University’s 2026 guide reports that 10 to 20 percent of trees in new orchards were killed within five years of planting. That figure describes affected new orchards, not a universal loss forecast.
Reduce stress and entry points
- Limit frost, mechanical, and insect injury, as well as unnecessary pruning and training wounds.
- Where practical, avoid wetting young trees above ground; drip irrigation is one option cited in extension guidance.
- Manage water and nutrition to avoid tree stress. Oregon State advises attention to soil pH and nutrition and cautions that excess late-season nitrogen can encourage tender growth vulnerable to early-winter injury.
- Control weeds and keep orchard practices focused on tree vigor without encouraging late-season growth that may be injured by cold.
When should I prune a cherry tree with bacterial canker?
Do not prune during cold, wet conditions. Choose a dry window when wounds can dry before cool, wet weather returns. Washington State University recommends summer pruning in dry conditions for susceptible cultivars. Remove infected branches and leaders, and take the cut material out of the orchard rather than leaving it near healthy trees.

How far below a canker should I cut?
A December 2025 WSU report found bacterial recovery in sampled shoots at different distances below visible canker margins: 100% at one inch, 97.4% at 1.5 inches, 18.4% at three inches, and 0% at five inches. Based on those samples, the report says cutting about five inches below the visible margin under hot, dry conditions can effectively remove the pathogen. These are sample findings, not a guarantee for every tree, cultivar, or region. See WSU’s canker-removal report.
Sanitize tools between cuts
Disinfect pruning tools after each cut while removing infected tissue; contaminated tools can carry inoculum to healthy tissue. A bypass pruning shear is a practical tool for making pruning cuts, but no shear brand prevents disease—the sanitation and cut placement matter.

Does copper spray work for bacterial canker?
There is no sound basis for treating copper as a universal answer. Guidance is regional, and resistance has been reported in multiple cherry-growing areas.
- Oregon: Oregon State University’s 2026 Pest Management Guide for Tree Fruits says fixed copper products and Bordeaux 12-12-100 are no longer recommended. The guide reports that recent trials found more damage in treated trees than in untreated controls.
- California: UC IPM says dormant or fall copper has not been consistently or reliably effective in California orchards and notes widespread copper resistance.
- Washington and other regions: WSU reports copper resistance in several regions and advises caution. Check current local extension guidance rather than transferring a recommendation across regions.
Older or regional mentions of chemical treatments do not establish that a product is currently registered, effective, or permitted for your orchard. Before considering any pesticide, consult current regional recommendations and read the current product label.

Can I treat cherry disease without harming bees?
The available sources do not establish a universally bee-safe spray for bacterial canker. An older OSU/WSU IPM strategic plan identifies pesticide impacts on managed and native bees, and spray timing relative to pollinator activity, as research needs; it is not current product advice. Prefer cultural prevention and pruning practices. If you consider a pesticide, follow its current local label and pollinator restrictions, and do not apply during bee foraging unless the label and local rules permit it. Do not assume that a product used against a fungal cherry disease also controls bacterial canker or is safe for pollinators.

UC IPM’s California page was last text-updated in September 2015, so use it for disease biology and regional context while checking current local recommendations. If you grow tart cherry or farm outside these regions, consult your local extension service before applying a pruning or spray recommendation.
