Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow corridors of water vapor moving through the atmosphere. When moist air reaches land and rises, it cools and the vapor condenses, producing rain or snow. Many events bring useful water; the strongest or longest-lasting can also cause flooding and mudslides, especially over vulnerable terrain.
What is an atmospheric river?
An atmospheric river is a concentrated flow of water vapor in the atmosphere, often extending for more than 1,000 miles while spanning roughly 250–375 miles in width, according to NOAA NESDIS’s 2025 explainer. It is a metaphorical river: the transported water is vapor in the air, not a stream of liquid water suspended overhead.
NOAA says an average atmospheric river carries water vapor at a rate roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Exceptionally strong examples can carry up to 15 times that amount, according to NOAA’s explainer, updated February 21, 2025. These comparisons describe water transport, not the amount of rain that will fall in a particular place.
Atmospheric rivers occur around the world and transport much of the water vapor outside the tropics. They are often associated with weather systems and winds that move moisture from warm ocean regions toward land.

How does an atmospheric river produce rainfall?
- Moisture enters the air. Warm ocean water evaporates, adding water vapor to the atmosphere. Many atmospheric rivers draw moisture from tropical regions.
- Winds carry the vapor. Weather-system winds concentrate and transport the moist air across long distances.
- Air rises and cools. As the moist air moves over land, it can be forced upward. Mountains can enhance this uplift.
- Water condenses and falls. Cooling causes vapor to condense into droplets or ice, which fall as precipitation. Depending on atmospheric and local conditions, that precipitation may be rain or snow.
Mountains can increase uplift and precipitation, but terrain alone does not determine a universal rainfall total. The result depends on the event’s moisture transport, duration, local weather and watershed conditions.
What is the Pineapple Express?
The Pineapple Express is a familiar nickname for a strong atmospheric river that can carry moisture from the tropical Pacific near Hawaii toward the U.S. West Coast. It refers to one moisture pathway, not every atmospheric river.

When does an atmospheric river bring heavy rain or flooding?
The name alone does not tell you whether an event will be dangerous. Impacts depend on how much moisture is transported, how strong the winds are, how long the system lasts, whether it stalls over one area, and how vulnerable local watersheds and terrain are. Precipitation type and existing snowpack also matter.
A strong atmospheric river that stalls over a flood-prone watershed can produce prolonged, heavy precipitation and flooding. Floodwaters and saturated slopes can trigger mudslides, while severe weather can disrupt travel. These outcomes are possible, not inevitable; many atmospheric rivers are weak and do not cause major damage.

For comparison, the U.S. Department of Energy says an average of 24 atmospheric rivers hit the U.S. West Coast each winter over the 1979–2019 period. That historical average does not predict how many will reach the coast in a particular winter or what their local effects will be.
Why can atmospheric rivers also benefit water supplies?
Rain and mountain snow from atmospheric rivers can replenish water supplies and build snowpack. NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory says about 30–50% of annual precipitation in West Coast states occurs in just a few atmospheric-river events. The statistic applies to those states and does not mean every event is beneficial everywhere: intense or persistent rainfall can overwhelm watersheds even as precipitation contributes to regional water supplies.

How are atmospheric rivers monitored and forecast?
Scientists monitor these moisture corridors using satellites, radar, aircraft and other observations, and use numerical weather models to help predict their movement and effects. NOAA NESDIS says GOES West can capture moisture imagery and information as often as every five minutes.
NOAA says forecasts can support warnings for potential heavy rain and flooding in prone areas as many as five to seven days ahead. That is a potential warning lead time, not a guarantee that every local impact will be known that far in advance. During an active event, check your local National Weather Service forecast and alerts for current conditions and instructions.
