Researchers proved a related statement called the 2-2 Games Conjecture, yielding important hardness results while leaving the original conjecture’s hardest, nearly satisfiable cases unresolved.
What is the Unique Games Conjecture?
A graph-labeling problem
Imagine a network whose vertices must each be assigned a label. Every connection between two vertices imposes a rule about which labels at its endpoints are compatible. The objective is to satisfy as many of those rules as possible. This is a mathematical optimization problem, not a consumer game.
The same problem can be expressed as a game between two players, which is why the term “Unique Games” appears in both formulations. In the graph version, the distinctive feature is that a constraint specifies a unique compatible choice for a neighboring label.
Why ask whether it is hard?
Finding the best labeling may be difficult, but approximation algorithms can seek an answer close to the best possible one. The conjecture concerns how hard it is to approximate certain instances: broadly, it predicts that even instances where almost all constraints can be satisfied may remain extraordinarily difficult to approximate efficiently.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Subhash Khot proposed the conjecture in 2002. Its importance grew because its truth would clarify the limits of approximation algorithms across a wide range of constraint satisfaction problems—not just graph coloring.
Did researchers prove the conjecture, or race AI to do it?
No full proof is reported in Erica Klarreich’s April 24, 2018 Quanta Magazine account, “First Big Steps Toward Proving the Unique Games Conjecture.” The account describes mathematical work by human researchers; it does not report an AI-generated proof or a contest to finish before machines did. The “raced to beat the machines” framing is therefore not supported by that coverage.

What the researchers did prove was the related 2-2 Games Conjecture. That result advanced the case for the original conjecture and established hardness for some Unique Games instances below the 50-percent satisfaction threshold. It did not settle the original conjecture’s near-perfect-satisfaction regime.
How does 2-2 Games differ from Unique Games?
The names are similar, but the two statements concern different constraint structures and different ranges of instances. The 2018 account describes the distinction this way:

| Question | Unique Games | 2-2 Games |
|---|---|---|
| Choices allowed by a constraint | A unique compatible choice | Two permitted choices |
| Satisfaction range at issue | The conjecture concerns instances that can be made nearly perfectly satisfiable | The reported hardness extension reaches some instances below 50 percent satisfiable |
| What the 2018 work established | It did not prove the full conjecture | It proved the related 2-2 Games Conjecture |
The article characterized the advance as roughly halfway toward the full conjecture. That is a description of the significance of the progress, not a literal measurement of how much of a proof had been completed.
Why does the conjecture matter for algorithms?
The conjecture would have consequences well beyond one labeling problem. In a 2008 result, Prasad Raghavendra showed conditionally that, if the Unique Games Conjecture is true, semidefinite programming gives optimal approximate solutions for a broad family of constraint satisfaction problems.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
In other words, the conjecture would help explain when a widely used optimization approach is as good as possible for that family—not merely whether a particular algorithm can be improved. The claim is conditional: the implication depends on the conjecture being true, and does not itself prove the conjecture.

A 2023 Quanta Magazine article, “Mathematicians Complete Quest to Build ‘Spherical Cubes’,” still described the Unique Games Conjecture as a major open question at that time. That establishes its status in 2023, not its status in 2026; the sources available for this article do not verify whether it has since been resolved.
