If an acne medicine causes severe or potentially life-threatening symptoms, seek emergency help now rather than waiting for an online prescriber to reply. In the United States, the FDA says to call 911 for a medical emergency; elsewhere, use your local emergency number. For symptoms that are not an emergency, contact the clinician who prescribed the medicine promptly and ask what to do before changing your dose or use.
Get emergency help for severe symptoms
Do not rely on a portal message for a medical emergency. Call 911 in the United States, or your local emergency number elsewhere, if symptoms are severe or could be life-threatening. The FDA reporting portal gives the 911 instruction for emergencies.
If you are unsure whether symptoms are an emergency, seek urgent medical advice rather than waiting for a routine online appointment. Online prescribing does not change the need for in-person or emergency care when symptoms are severe.
Contact the prescriber promptly about other suspected side effects
Use the prescribing service’s established clinician-messaging or phone route. Explain that you suspect a side effect and ask for individualized instructions. Do not wait for a routine follow-up if symptoms are concerning. FDA consumer guidance recommends contacting a health professional first about an adverse event and working with one on your care.

Include the details that help the clinician assess what is happening:
- The medicine’s exact name and formulation, prescribed dose, and how you have been using it.
- When you started treatment and when the symptoms began.
- What the symptoms are, whether they are changing, and how they affect you.
- Other medicines or supplements you take, known allergies, and relevant health conditions.
If you cannot reach the prescriber promptly, contact a pharmacist or another qualified health professional for advice. For symptoms that become severe, use emergency services instead of waiting for a reply.

Do not assume every acne medicine should be stopped or continued
The right next step depends on the specific medicine and symptom. Check that medicine’s current label or Medication Guide, then ask the prescriber or a pharmacist whether to stop, continue, or otherwise change it. A general article cannot safely give one instruction for every prescription; do not start, stop, taper, or restart a medicine based only on generic advice.
If you take isotretinoin
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says to report possible isotretinoin side effects to your dermatologist immediately. It specifically says to stop isotretinoin and see a doctor for severe abdominal or bowel pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, jaundice, or dark urine. This is an isotretinoin-specific instruction, not a rule for other acne medicines. See the AAD’s isotretinoin safety guidance.

The AAD says isotretinoin follow-up visits occur every 30 days, in person or by telemedicine. That schedule is specific to isotretinoin guidance; it does not establish the follow-up schedule or response time of every online acne service. See the AAD’s isotretinoin FAQ.
Use comfort measures only as support, not as a substitute for advice
For isotretinoin, the AAD lists dry skin, chapped lips, dry or irritated eyes, and nosebleeds among common side effects. It discusses skin-care steps and recommends a non-comedogenic or oil-free moisturizer for dryness. These measures may help with comfort, but they do not replace contacting the prescriber about a suspected reaction. The AAD also cautions against some potentially irritating skin-care ingredients while taking isotretinoin; check its isotretinoin side-effects and skincare guidance before adding products.
