Open the app you use to manage the camera and look for its account, user, or security settings. If the camera is older or does not offer credential controls in an app, its settings may be available in a web browser at the camera’s local IP address. There is no single password-change path for every camera: check the manual or manufacturer’s support page for your exact model before following button-by-button instructions.
Change the password using the camera’s app or browser
- Identify the brand and exact model. Find its manual or manufacturer support page and follow the password-change instructions for that model. Do not assume that another camera’s menu labels, login details, or reset procedure apply. The FTC’s camera security guidance recommends consulting the camera guide; the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) likewise directs users to manufacturer documentation for exact steps.
- Look in the management app. Open the app associated with the camera and check account, user, or security settings. These are likely places to look, not guaranteed menu names; labels and available controls vary by model.
- If the camera uses a browser interface, find its local IP address. For older cameras, the NCSC notes that settings may be accessed through a browser using the camera’s IP address. You can look for that address in your router’s connected-device list, then use the browser interface as the manufacturer instructs. Do not assume that the camera is reachable from outside your home network.
- Set a strong, unique password. Do not keep a default password or reuse one from another website or account. The FTC gives this advice specifically for camera credentials. The NCSC suggests connecting three random words you can remember as one way to make a secure password.
- Save the new credentials securely. Complete any confirmation step the app or camera requests, then use the new password the next time you sign in. If the interface offers a separate user or administrator account, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for which credential you are changing.
Why the steps differ between cameras
Camera makers do not all supply or handle initial credentials in the same way. Some products may arrive with a default password that the owner should change; others require the owner to create an administrator password during setup. For example, Hanwha Vision says its cameras have no default password and require an administrator password to be set before other functions are available. That is Hanwha-specific guidance, not a rule for other brands.
Access methods can also be model-specific. Hanwha lists browser, Wisenet Device Manager, or NVR setup routes in its support article, updated March 12, 2025. For a different example, the Axis M3016 support page instructs users to establish secure HTTPS and change the password after first login. These examples illustrate why the exact model’s manual matters; they are not universal menu paths.
Manufacturer practices also reflect a broader security principle: the UK government’s consumer IoT code of practice says device passwords should be unique and not resettable to a universal factory default. This is guidance directed at manufacturers, not a claim that the code imposes a legal requirement on every camera owner.

If you cannot sign in or have forgotten the password
Password recovery is not the same as changing a password while signed in. The available recovery options and any reset procedure depend on the exact make and model, so use that manufacturer’s instructions or contact its support team. Do not try a shared username and password found online, or use a factory reset as a universal shortcut: credential defaults and reset steps differ, and a reset may affect the camera’s setup.

Secure the rest of the camera setup
- Install software updates. The NCSC recommends keeping camera software up to date. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for checking and installing updates.
- Review remote viewing. If you do not need to view the camera remotely, consider disabling remote access where the product allows it. The NCSC cautions that this can affect alerts or smart-home functions, so check the consequences before changing the setting.
- Do not treat the password as the only safeguard. CISA includes changing default passwords in its exposure-reduction guidance, published June 4, 2025. A joint NSA/CISA advisory identifies default credentials as a common misconfiguration and notes that security cameras and other IoT devices can have them.
