Make reading on an iPad mini easier by adjusting text and display settings first, then try Apple’s built-in Accessibility Reader. Add Zoom or touch accommodations only if you need them, and use Guided Access when you want to stay in one reading app. These are optional settings: choose what feels comfortable for your eyes, hands, and reading position.
What to know about the iPad mini’s size and weight
Apple identifies the current model as the iPad mini (A17 Pro), introduced in 2024. Its display measures 8.3 inches diagonally. Apple lists the Wi-Fi model at 293 g and the Wi-Fi + Cellular model at 297 g; both figures exclude a case or grip. The device measures 195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3 mm.
Those specifications describe the device, not how comfortable it will be to hold. Your experience may depend on your hand, case or grip, and posture. Try reading in your usual position before adding accessories or changing how you hold it.
How do I make text and the display easier to read?
Start with text size and appearance. Apple makes accessibility options available during initial setup and later in Settings. On an already configured iPad, open Settings > Accessibility and look through Display & Text Size for display adjustments and Read & Speak for reading options. - Choose a text size you can comfortably sustain over a reading session.
- Adjust the display appearance to suit the light where you read. There is no single brightness or color setting that is right for everyone.
- Check the result in the app or content you actually use; text and layout can vary between apps.
How do I use Accessibility Reader or have text read aloud?
Accessibility Reader gives supported text a full-screen reading view with adjustable fonts, layouts, and background colors. Apple says it lets you “read or listen to text in a full-screen view.” To turn it on, go to Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak > Accessibility Reader. You can enable Autoplay if you want speech to begin automatically. Apple’s spoken-content guide explains the feature.
Try the reader with the material you intend to read, then adjust its presentation to your preference. If you want speech, check the playback and Autoplay behavior before settling in; you can also use the reader without making spoken text part of your setup.

When should I use Zoom?
If text in a particular app remains too small, iPad’s Zoom can magnify part or all of the screen. Find it under Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. Apple documents three modes: Full Screen, Window, and Pinned Zoom. A three-finger double tap activates Zoom.
Choose a mode that enlarges the text while leaving enough surrounding context to follow the page. Zoom is adjustable, so experiment with the magnified area and scale rather than assuming that maximum enlargement will be easiest to read. Apple’s Zoom instructions describe the available options.

Can I make touchscreen actions easier with one hand?
AssistiveTouch offers alternatives for some touchscreen actions. It may help if a particular gesture is difficult, but it is not a guaranteed solution for reaching every control one-handed. Find it under Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch; Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide covers its controls.
Try it only if you have a specific action you want to make easier. If the control or gesture you need is not made more convenient, you can turn the feature off again.

How do I keep the iPad in my reading app?
Guided Access can temporarily keep the iPad in one app. It can also set a time limit or restrict features, hardware buttons, or touch areas. To configure it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access and turn it on. Set a Guided Access passcode or choose an available biometric exit option there, so you know how to end the session.
- Open the reading app you want to use.
- Start Guided Access using the accessibility shortcut configured for your iPad.
- Set any session options you need, such as a time limit or restrictions on touch areas, buttons, or features.
- End the session using the Guided Access exit controls and the passcode or biometric option you configured.
Apple’s Guided Access guide has the current activation and exit instructions. Use this feature when you want a single-app session; it is not required for ordinary reading.

How should I check whether one-handed reading works for me?
Try the setup in your normal reading position, using the device as you intend to hold it. The listed weight is 293 g for Wi-Fi or 297 g for Wi-Fi + Cellular before adding a case or grip. A case or accessory changes the feel and weight, so check its compatibility with the iPad mini (A17 Pro) before buying; no particular grip or case can be assumed to fit or feel comfortable for you.
- Can you hold the iPad steadily for the length of a typical reading session?
- Can you reach the controls you use without an awkward stretch?
- Does the chosen text size preserve enough page context to follow what you read?
- Would a stand or a change in posture be more comfortable than holding the iPad throughout?
Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), but a pencil is optional and is not needed for this reading setup. Apple’s specifications do not establish whether the iPad mini is comfortable for every person or reading position.
